Phil
I took apart my MX5 rear drive shaft, the inner cv joint just unbolts from the diff and there is no loss of oil as it is sealed, is this the same for the seirra diff and the new BMW diff people are fitting on the 7? I was wondering if brake discs sandwedged between the inner cvs and diff with two calipers mounted on the diff would creat an effective inboard braking system and save weight? This could be used on both the DD set up and a fully independant rear end.
John Alston
Yes it probably would. But from my experience with inboard discs on both a Lotus Esprit and a Cobra replica, they will be a pain in the arse as they just get far too hot and are almost impossible to get cooling air to. Rj52car
When the BMW diff is delivered it does have short shafts inserted with a flange for a drive shaft/Cv joint to bolt to, BUT ... you pull them out and throw them away, then insert a full (splined) drive shaft. So you could do what you're suggesting if you modded the caterham drive shafts to put a flange on the end.
