Leadership Team Midas Posted December 31, 2010 Leadership Team Share Posted December 31, 2010 I notice from my workshop manual that in order to get the correct tension on my replacement cambelt on my VVC (manual tensioner), I am supposed to use a tension spring and a pillar bolt. Neither came with the kit, and the original 'well known' supplier has never heard of either parts. Apparently with the VVC you remove said spring and ditch it before replacing the cam cover. I've trawlled the net and these bits seem impossible to get hold of - a sentiment shared by the MGF community. the 'wisdom' on other sites is that you don't need to use these bits - just tighten it to about a 1/4 turn tension on the longest run. Any thoughts welcome?
Stationary M25 Traveller
Just did it by 'feel' on mine. No special tensioning kit needed. Don't forget there is a second belt at the back of the engine !
Leadership Team Midas Posted December 31, 2010 Author Leadership Team Share Posted December 31, 2010 Good spot - didn't realise there was a rear belt! 😳
Leadership Team Midas Posted January 1, 2011 Author Leadership Team Share Posted January 1, 2011 Just in case anyone else is looking for this elusive spring in the future, I found a distributor. Its Rimmer Brothers Part Number ZUA000420 - Spring - Cost 75p they also do the non-VVC version as well
Leadership Team Midas Posted January 8, 2011 Author Leadership Team Share Posted January 8, 2011 the spring turned up today - and a proper Rover item as well. If it stops snowing I might just try and do the change this afternoon
oilyhands
The spring is a liability, it doesn't tension the belt (although people think it does and end up with a slack belt) and I cant think of anything useful it does except get in the way/fall off into the belt void. I would throw it away. Oily
Leadership Team Midas Posted January 9, 2011 Author Leadership Team Share Posted January 9, 2011 Thanks Oily - it does seem a bit slack. I understand from the manual that with the VVC you must dispense with the spring anyway - only use it for installation, whereas on non-vvc engines you should leave the spring in place (indeed it's a different spring with a sleeve for non-vvc)
