McBreadhead
Does anyone have an internal micrometer capable of measuring 85mm cylinder bores? I need it quite urgently to order correct piston ring set. Thanks in advance.

McBreadhead
Hi all you secret tool mongers, Andrew has kindly offered loan of his machine but logistics mean I won't be able to get to it till Sunday. Does anyone have a mic that's closer to Dorking Surrey or Winchester Hants that I could borrow this week? My engine builder goes on hols in 10 days and the clock is ticking. oilyhands
Nick, It is perfectly possible to use a simple bore gauge and a regular micrometer to measure the bore of your engine, these I think may be easier to lay your hands on than a proper internal mic. McBreadhead
Oily, Was ist ein bore gauge then? I've never seen or used one and don't know how they are used with conventional micrometer
oilyhands
A proper internal micrometer is a precision three or four legged precison instrument that has limited range, a bore gauge is a simpler affair wiht a small sprung loaded gauge on a stick with a dial gauge attached, this does not give an absolute measurement but just an indication for measuring ovality. Once a reading has been taken, then the position on the dial is noted and then simulated in a regular anvil type micrometer to get an absolute value.
