Caterham 160 Build Blog

700newtons

I ordered my 160 in April 2014. Here is my blog. I hope it maybe useful and interesting to others.

Caterham 160  Expected delivery November 2014.
Full Screen and weather equipment, carpets, lowered floors, push button start, leather seats, Momo steering wheel, heater, Race 4pt harness, Track day roll bar.
Ballistic orange

The lowered floor provides the driver with a clearer view and the 4pt harness and track day roll bar are for improved safety. I understand that access the Lotus 7 club track days is only possible with a track day roll bar too.

Why did I go for a 160? I definitely wanted to build my own car, I was impressed with my test drive, reviews and friends were very positive about it, there are significant savings over a Roadsport and it can be driven to capacity at road legal speeds.

Tools and Equipment (so far!)

Strongman Tools
Trolley jack and axle stands (discount with L7club membership)

Halfords
Socket set, prof torque wrench 8-60Nm, prof torque wrench 60-300Nm. Birzman deadblow hammer

Maplin
Garage alarm

Hi all, just heard from Caterham that my car passed its IVA on Friday and they are delivering it back to me on Thursday, relief!  It seems they replaced the ECU, Exhaust and the Lambda sensor as well so I'm glad I dropped it back to them for fixing.  The paperwork is in the post so now I'm hoping for a quick turnaround from the DVLA and I have some carbon fibre wing protectors, a high level brake light and the power socket to fit whilst I'm waiting.  I also plan to do 1,000 miles and the oil change before we head to France in early June so if all goes to plan it should work out

Regards

Martin

I'm glad that they pulled out the stops to get it sorted quickly.

Yes they are delivering back tomorrow, Martin the after sales chap has been very helpful in getting my car back and passing the IVA. It was important that the emissions were fixed as it will make future MOTs difficult. Now looking forward to getting it on the road

Mine passed the IVA retest today...  *woohoo*

Hopefully I shall be on the road shortly. Can't wait.

Well done Simon and Martin, some good news at last.

I got my PBC bill today; nothing knocked off for the IVA steering wheel postage, not that I expected any with CC making a £millions loss last year! Anyway, they did a good job on the PBC to get me through IVA so I've paid up.

I see in this months Low Flying interview with the CEO he admits they overstretched themsleves and CC's suppliers couldn't keep up - explains the missing bits we have all experienced.

Now where's this Clarks Village place..........................?

Hi All, great news Simon about your IVA.  Its now been 5 days since my paperwork went off, I've been busy installing a high level brake light (since I realised how low the 160 was!) my carbon fibre wing protectors and a power socket.  I also picked up a oil filter and the touring bag in anticipation of the trip to France in June, so I hope the DVLA come through.  Sounds like a 160 gathering might be getting closer

Hi Simon we are coming back from France on the 20th and flying in to the fly-in meet at North Weald on the 21st but don't let me stop any arrangements, we could do the 28th if that helps

Hmm.. We seem pretty busy around June. How about 8th or 9th August?

Hi All, I've got the power socket all wired up and tried some velcro on the fuse box cover but it still seems a bit loose and rattly, has anyone cracked securing the fuse box so it is tight underneath the dash?

Thanks

Martin

Hi Fellow 160 owners. Looks like we might be zeroing in on Aug and lunch in Somerset sounds good to me. Sat 8th OK with me, but 9th is a no:no I'm afraid

Ok lets meet for lunch in Street, Somerset on Saturday 8th August. I'll book a table at a local pub.

We could perhaps get a group photo in Low Flying with Glastonbury Tor in the background.

For long suffering other halves there will be an opportunity for shopping in Clark's village. (Or alternatively we could blat around Cheddar Gorge).

Let me know if you are interested (and whether it is one or two) and I'll send a private mail, or email, the week before.

Hi Simon

All being well, I'll be there. I'm not sure of my sailing commitments this August, but a nice trip to Somerset sounds like a lot of fun to me!

I'd been warned that DVLA/VOSA/whatever were taking 5 weeks to turn around post IVA. Thank goodness that's wrong!

All being well, my first weekend in the car will be 4 July...

My registration forms went in the post yesterday....

Miles 200 report - a few local 'blats' over the weekend saw the 200 come up; still staying below 4k revs (but occasionally higher for short 'blats' when leaving a 'juicey' roundabout!) and everything going really well. Annoying bits are; occasional squeaky back brakes when hot/lifting off/light on the pedal and the passenger seat belt buckle rattling against the cockpit side. I chamfered off the leading edges of the rear brake linings (remembered from my Mk1 Mini days!) but it doesn't seem to have worked; they probably need more bedding in. And a bit of carpet velcroed to the cockpit side to stop the rattling!

I've also managed to get my golf clubs AND trolley in the car - result or what!

Good to hear of the progress, Peter!

Mine is sitting in the garage, awaiting pickup in a week or so for PBC etc.

You're right about the carpet. I like the carpet supplied, but was surprised there wasn't a piece for the outside cockpit wall. Even without driving the car yet, I don't like the clanking of the harnesses against the wall! I wonder if Thundersports or somebody would make some up in the same material.

Good to hear that you are enjoying it Peter.

I'm just wondering how to fix the number plate on when I collect. I'm thinking of 'no more nails'.

any wisdom?

Hi I'm now up to 450 miles, did a trip to the coast today.  The car is great and I love going up the gears once you are in 2nd. I've been concerned about the oil pressure gauge showing a very low(in the red) once the engine is warm at idle.  I've been in contact with Caterham who've assured me that the gauge is only an indication and if the pressure is ok at higher revs thrn all is good.  Simon I used Unibond double sided tape from Maplins for my number plates,  the sticking power seems amazing, I found it after a blatchat search.  I also used the hood in the pouring rain, grip was fun and one or two small leaks but nothing too serious

Hi. For number plates I velcroed the back and use Halfords white plastic bolts for the front where the front GRP area is quite small. However, I used small plates (still legal), not the full size ones as I think they look neater at both ends. I also have 'show plates' and unevitably the 'plod' will catch up with me so I didn't want anything too 'sticky' that would risk the paint when I have to 'report to the station' with proper plates!

a letter arrived from the DVLA today; I thought 'good news' I now have my registration.

Sadly not; the DVLA were not happy with my Built up vehicle report (although I followed the instructions from Caterham to leave it blank, apart from the contact details and signature)

more delays *banghead*

I'd be grateful if any of you are happy to email a scan of your V627/1 built up vehicle report so that I can compare it with mine.

Thanks for the number plate advice from you both.
