Caterham 160 Build Blog

700newtons

I ordered my 160 in April 2014. Here is my blog. I hope it maybe useful and interesting to others.

Caterham 160  Expected delivery November 2014.
Full Screen and weather equipment, carpets, lowered floors, push button start, leather seats, Momo steering wheel, heater, Race 4pt harness, Track day roll bar.
Ballistic orange

The lowered floor provides the driver with a clearer view and the 4pt harness and track day roll bar are for improved safety. I understand that access the Lotus 7 club track days is only possible with a track day roll bar too.

Why did I go for a 160? I definitely wanted to build my own car, I was impressed with my test drive, reviews and friends were very positive about it, there are significant savings over a Roadsport and it can be driven to capacity at road legal speeds.

Tools and Equipment (so far!)

Strongman Tools
Trolley jack and axle stands (discount with L7club membership)

Halfords
Socket set, prof torque wrench 8-60Nm, prof torque wrench 60-300Nm. Birzman deadblow hammer

Maplin
Garage alarm

Martin - sorry again the hear your disappointing IVA news, it seems unexplainable and I hope Caterham sort you out sooner rather than later. If it turns out to be their fault I would bill them for the retest cost.

I've pointed out that it cost me £12 to post the IVA steering wheel back to them and asked why should I pay for a Caterham design fault .................I'm not holding my breath for a reduction on my PBC invoice - when I get it that is!

Simon - best of British today, the 160 builders club need some good news!

You're right Peter! I'm not looking forward to the whole process!

On a different note, how did you all figure out the fusebox cover? It's like some kind of puzzle, sent to test us, isn't it? I have no clue what to do with the damned thing...

Fuse Box Cover - picture below. Basically the hole (where I have put my 12v socket is on the right and the sloping bit is facing into the cockpit tucked up behind the dashboard with the box section under the fuse box. I used Velcro to fix mine; which seems to have FuseBoxCover.jpg.b50e7b8effb1e5456624f0df8057f00b.jpgworked. You will note that the rubber bung on the left (in the knee plate) has been cut away so the fuse box plate fits flush. And I put some IVA trim down the RH sharp edge. It took Simon and I an exchange of emails to sort it; and still doesn't look right as the passengers knees will thump straight into the box section!

Martin - sorry to hear you had trouble at the IVA; different people, different interpretation perhaps - try Southampton!

Below is my emissions readout; just about readable and I hope it helps. I can't think why one newly built car passes and another doesn't.

Same as you; I believe you are allowed to drive to the test station but if you don't have a pass or fail cert and get caught 'going home' I think it's an offence. Incidentally, you don't need number plates for the IVA. Whilst I have a number and fitted them to look less conspicuous on the journey the tester didn't test the corner radii - yes you've guessed it, they need to be a certain size!

Many thanks, Peter

I'm assuming that this goes in the 'spare bits of metal' box once the IVA is passed... Your passenger's knee would get a softer landing on the fuse box cover!

All the best

Ned

PS Back end of the car now all sorted, thanks to the arrival of two poxyy little aluminum bush spacers

Ned, it makes a good place for the 12V Socket if you fit one. (You can do it for a few pounds).

Bad news folks.

I found out today that my car failed on two counts. A fuse blew on the windscreen wipers during testing - I think that there might be a problem with the wiring. It also failed because of the seat belt mountings (which Caterham put in).

Caterham will get it sorted.

more waiting though *weeping*

Hard luck on the fuse Simon - I think it's sods law isn't it! But surely incorrect seat belt mounts should have been picked up at PBC.

Heard from DVLA today, registration docs were OK except for me not answering two questions and signing on the back page of a part completed (by Caterham) 'V627/1 - Built Up Vehicle Report'  - entirely my error. They were very good though, and allowed me to download a form, complete it, email a copy to an personal email address and get a receipt acknowledgment..............all in 15mins. So, weather permitting I hope to be on the road next week.

My wiper fuse blew when I first tested the electrics. Talking to Derek, I mentioned that the wipers made a nasty grinding sound.

He said they should just whirr quietly, but that he knew exactly what's happening to mine, and that I should mark it on the PBC, and that they should call Derek to get his guidance on how to fix it. Seems a bit of a long way round... But anyway, I will flag this at PBC, and then hopefully they can fix it.

I replaced the 10A with a 15A fuse, and it didn't blow, despite the grinding noise. I assume it's some alignment problem in the worm gears...

Too late to be of any help, Simon, but you might mention the 'call Derek' bit to the PBC people.

Cheers

Ned

Thanks both... I think I'll phone Paul discuss it.

One thing that also bothers me, and I wrote on my snagging list, is that the key is slightly 'sticky' in the barrel. I.e. It is slightly awkward to remove. Have you found this with your cars?

Link to comment

Yes, mine is a bit hit and miss. When it arrived, I thought the key was jammed in the barrel. Sometimes it does get stuck. Apparently carbon powder is a good non-sticky lubricant, I've heard.

Yes I have the same issue with the steering barrel, let me know the solution.  Also has anyone seen their oil pressure when hot and idling, mine is well into the red zone, picks up ok when revving and the oil is full but slightly disturbing. I've done a lot of idling at hot whilst waiting for the emissions test, still no news from Crawley

I have not had the privilege of seeing me car running yet but I will look out for this. I emailed Derek about the key barrel. I notice on one of the  car magazine reviews the writer had a problem with a key getting stuck; this is what got me thinking.

Key - I have also found the key a bit sticky but used some wet and dry to ease the sharp corners, lubricated the barrel a bit and now have the 'knack' of getting it in and out.

Oil pressure at idle - mine is close to the red when hot but never actually enters it. But on a red hot day, who knows!

Hi All. My reg doc arrived today so I'm 'on the road' and couldn't resist a 'first time' legal spin. Great fun but unfortunately it included a stone chipping the paint on back RH wing ABOVE the SS protectors - email on its way to Premier Paint Guard this very day!

Regarding getting the film on. I would say that it looks OK for a novice to have a go at the wings (this is what I would do, if I built another car). He does a discount for L7 members too.

Great news about the reg document, hope you got a nice plate number. How many weeks did it take from IVA to getting your V5?  I am waiting on Caterham about my emissions, hopefully should find out on Tuesday

Martin - IVA to Reg Doc in 'sticky mitt' was 10 days so all the warnings re 3 - 6 weeks are an over estimation. I had bought a plate before the registration (C16 OPM that now looks like C160 PM on the car!) so sent an Assignment Form off with the reg docs.,,,,,,,,,hey Guys, there might be lots of C16 O?? plates still available from DVLA!!

Simon - many thanks for your advice on self application of 3M film - I might just do that. Trouble now of course is that it's no good doing it over a touched up chip so the wing will need a proper respray. I should have done it earlier like you - I thought the SS protectors would be sufficient.

just drive it and enjoy it; dents, stone chips and all! That is my plan anyway.

You're right of course................must be an illness you get when you have built it yourself!

Good luck for good news tomorrow

My OCD has come out in a different way. To while away the days I have had a go at beefing up my garage security. I put together an alarm from a PIR sensor, arduino and other bits. It looks a mess but it can sense when you walk in the garage and trigger an alarm.

it kept me busy anyway...
