  1. No my issue is when under braking, not just driving along and sounds similar to what OBNS describes. I was wondering whether a change in pads might help, as they don't seem to be too effective at slower speeds but come into their own under hard braking and when they get hot.

It is almost like they set up some sort of resonance at 40mph when braking, is that possible?

  2. I have cross drilled brake discs fitted to the (recently aquired) tintop and have noticed that when braking, as I pass 40mph, I get what can only be described as a loud hum. It disappears as the speed drops, and only occurs at 40mph.

It is definitely not a grinding noise i.e. not crud on the discs, there is no vibration through the pedal or the steering wheel and braking performance seems totally fine.

Other forums suggest that these sort of discs are prone to humming, (notably on BMW M3s) but to what degree and how loud? Currently it seems a bit excessive to me, but have no experience of other cars with drilled discs.

Anybody out there got any experience or can offer advice, before I wheel the car down to the dealers for them to tell me TADTS?

    Thanks

  3. Got scam written all over it - supposedly brand new, no previous owners but somehow it's done 800km *confused*

(edit) now read that it has done the mileage in the course of "publicity photos" - tosh in my view

  6. I have 5 off 13 x 6" KN Minator wheels (black centres, polished rims) all fitted with 185 / 60 Bridgestone RE720 tyres for sale. De Dion fitment.

They have been little used, mainly for about 6 or so sprint events, a couple of trackdays and maybe 100 road miles only. The 'spare' has never been used, the other four tyres have loads of tread left on them. Wheels themselves are immaculate, no flaking or corrosion whatsoever.

Can be seen on my car here

£450 ovno for the set, buyer to collect from Nottingham area

  7. With regards to the dry sump setup, I too was warned very strongly about just filling the engine with oil through the cam cover, say after an oil change, and not putting any in the bellhousing tank.

Reason being (and I assume it to be the case even if you are cranking it over without plugs etc) is that if all the oil is in the sump pan, then it will take some seconds for the scavenge pump to suck it all out and return it to the belltank. During this period the main oil pump is starved of oil and as such so are are the bits that need it (bearings, etc). This is enough time to do some nasty and expensive damage

Dry sump pan is very shallow as you would expect and isn't designed to hold all that oil anyhow, hence what Rob is saying about pistons hitting oil (although first time I've heard this, but makes sense)

Can't comment on the 8 cap screws on the conning tower though, since mine is the older design where the top simply screws off for filling.

  8. Symptom: car left standing overnight or whilst at work and the car starts OK, but if a few electrical devices are turned on such as headlights, heated seat and rear demister soon after the battery warning light clicks on and this causes the rear demister to turn off. Switch it back on, drive away and it happens again and does so for maybe half a dozen times. After that, I can have everything on and no problems.

Sounds like a charging circuit / alternator / battery issue here, but what can I do to try and narrow it down. Car is booked it to the dealer next Wednesday for a computer diagnostic, but I like to 'point' them in a likely direction if I could since I'm not convinced this will show on the computer.

    So far:

    - After a drive, checked voltage across battery terminals = 12.2V

    - Whilst idling, voltage across terminals = 14.0V

    - Checked voltage across terminals about 1.5hrs later and it had dropped to 12.0V

So, does this indicate an excessive current draw on the battery after the ignition is turned off, and if so how can I measure the current draw (I have a multimeter, but not too much clue on how to use it). Or is such a drop expected?

I'll measure the voltage again later and in the morning for comparison, but does anyone know what I could investigate next?

    Car is a 2004 Fabia

    Thanks
