  1. Have a knocking/clunking sounds from the rear.

We have a 2001 Caterham ex-megagrad race car. Has a LSD and straight cut type 9 box.

A little while ago we noticed that when we pushed the car in and out the garage there was a knocking coming from the back end. I could feel a bit of play in one of the axles so we replaced both of those. Still happened every now and again.

Tonight we went and got it out the trailer to check it over before a trackday in a couple of weeks. Rolled it in and out the garage and it was silent. I took it for a quick blast down the road. While I was driving steady letting it warm up it felt fine. I then turned around at a junction and it sounded like it was clicking as I was turning. I gave it some stick back down the road and it sounded like it was misfiring a little bit. I slowed down and thought I would take an easy drive back and every time I touched the throttle it would judder like it was misfiring but if I dipped the clutch and revved it would rev up absolutely fine but as soon as I let the clutch out and accelerated it would stutter again.

Put it back in the garage and jacked it up tried to see if anything was loose, only thing I could see was a bit of play where the propshaft went into the gearbox (don't think it was the UJ) and there seems to be quite alot of play in the diff as in you turn a rear wheel and it takes 50mm of a turn before the prop starts moving. Is this normal?

After having a look around I dropped it back down and took it up the road driving pretty slowly, prob not going over 20mph and it felt fine!

Anyone have any ideas? I'm tempted to get a couple of UJ's for the propshaft and try those just to eliminate it.

  4. 1999 MK2 Mazda MX5
    Full service history
    MOT until July 2015
    112000 miles
Colour coded hard top with heated rear screen
Factory fitted side skirts and front splitter
Cambelt and water pump done at Mazda 6000 miles ago
I have just changed the oil, filter, spark plugs, HT leads and Aux belts
    Factory Nardi steering wheel
    Limited slip differential
    5 speed gear box
All tyres have very good tread
    15 inch alloy wheels
    CD player

This car is in very good condition inside and out. The factory fitted body kit and rare twilight blue really set the car off.

    Ready to drive away!

Old bad point with the car is the soft top hood has been badly repaired so this would need changing. But coming with the removable hardtop means this is not a problem.

    £1500

will try try get some pictures up loaded but you can mail me if you want them straight away

  5. I think the time has come for me to get another seven. I have had a break and tired a few other things but nothing comapres.

Looking for a K Series or HPC

Any extras would be a bonus like big brakes, tillets, LSD and things but not vital.

Looking at up to around £13000. Would be up for buying as cheaper car that needed some work.

Let me know what is about

    Thanks

    Scott

  6. Quoting R400C:
... and the 6 speed box ... slightly harder and more expensive to sort but with the engine spec might not be missed anyway ...

titanium7 did offer me the car after I put this up but it is just outside of my max budget unfortunately.

    Quoting mav:
with the greatest of respect, DVA is not the only person capable of changing the head gasket...

Hi Mav, I'm sure there are many other people that can do it but after dave did mine before I had great confidence in the car so would quite like that again. If the relevant paperwork was with a car showing a well known specialist had done the head gasket I'm sure I would be happy.

  7. I don't think I can go much longer without a 7 in the garage so if the right car comes along I will be very very tempted. I do however have quite a strict guideline for what I want my next one to be.

    -1.6 or 1.8 or 2.0

    - LSD

    - 6 Speed Box

    - tillets

    - Throttle Bodies

    - If rover engined it must have had the the head gasket done by DVA

I know it rounds picky but I would rather hang out for a decent car than rush into buying one I'm not 100% with. Might be willing to budge on 1 or 2 of the things so let me know what you have.

    Thanks

  8. Thanks for everyones comments and I will miss having a 7! Superlight91 summed it up really, it is an unbelievable car and mentally fast but after it happening twice it is defiantly time for someone else to take it over! I think I am going to give cars a break and itch a scratch I have been having for a while with an enduro bike until I get a bit more enthused about cars again! I will definitely own another 7 one day!! Thanks!!
  9. I'm sure most have seen on pistonheads but incase some people haven't I am selling the fireblade. Haven't had the best of luck with the car. Couple of things went wrong, one being the big end. I bought another engine and fitted it and unfortunately the same thing happened so I'm certain that the dry sump pump has gone as the dry sump is the only thing that I swapped from engine to engine. After this happening and the bad luck I had with my previous car with the head gasket going I think I am going to give caterham a rest for a while.

The car is well known within the club and people know how good it is so if anyone is after a fireblade engined car please let them know. To get it all up and running it just needs and engine and a scavenge pump from pace.

  10. Thanks for everyone's replies. I will have a look at where the temp sender is. All the companies that have been recommended looks good. I will send a few emails.

    Quoting Andrew Walker:
Scott, have you tried experimenting with the adjustable dampers - assuming it still has the adjustable Leda dampers on it. Best place to do this is on a track-day - try different settings and keep notes between settings.

It was always odd seeing the temperature at 60 degrees, but James, and Paul Harvey, didn't think it an issue.

Hi Andrew, it does still have the Leda dampers. I might have a bit of a fiddle at the next track day if I don't get it set up before then. And the 60 degrees is fine, dad's old one used to run at that. I am thinking more of when it drops to 45ish.

  11. My suspension seems quite soft at the moment and want it set up for track use. I was wonder where people recommend. The south west would be good but don't mind travelling for the right company!

Also the engine temp runs at around 60 degrees normally which I think is normal for a fireblade car but it drops to around 40 degrees if I am driving late at night when the air temp is a lot cooler. I am running an aluminium radiator. Is this too cold? Should I make up a guard to block part of the radiator for when it gets cold?

    Thanks in advance

    Scott

  12. It most prob came from a drift car! It is the norm in drifting to weld the diff so both wheels spin at the same time. It is a lot more predictable than an LSD(and cheaper) when drifting because it won't come unlocked but makes the car awful to drive at anything below 20mph.

  13. I have a roll cage for an imperial chassis caterham for sale

i sprayed over it will a rattle can to make it look respectable as the powder coating was a bit chipped. It is usable in the condition is in but isn't immaculate but this is factored into the price.

It is located at Brands Hatch with Sevens and Classics so will have to be picked up from there.

    £225ono
