  1. Hello all,

    My SLR is loud!

Before lockdown, I had it noise tested at Goodwood, in the hope of doing some trackdays.  It made c. 105(+)dB, so is too loud for most tracks.  It's on roller barrel throttle bodies.

I've taken the silencer off and replaced the baffle and repacked it and am in the process of putting it back on the car.

There was no exhaust paste sealing the manifold to the exhaust at the 4 into 1 union.  Should there be?  When I put it back on the car, it was blowing at this union- meaning I could feel the exhaust 'draft' around the union.

Should I use exhaust sealing paste here?  Will it help quieten it?  I'm reluctant to use paste as it will make it much harder to disassemble in future.

    All advice is welcome!

    Many thanks.

    Dave

  2. Since I have a little more time at the moment......., I thought I’d conclude this thread with the outcome in case it helps folk in the future wishing to buy wheels.

At the recommendation of Neil (7 Wonders), I went to Revolution Wheels and can highly recommend this company: Warren was superb to deal with, including being extremely knowledgeable.

So, after discussion with Warren, I went with the following:

    Front:

    13 x 6.5; ET 24

    The full details are: 13 x 6.5 4 Spoke race ET 24 4-108/63.5 M'blk HR-Caterham, c4.3kg each

    Rear:

    13 x 7.0 ET 00

    The full details are: 13 x 7.0 4 Spoke race ET 00 4-108/63.5 M'blk HR-Caterham; c4.6kg each

I had to balance the width of the rear wheel with available non-list 1B (Motorsport UK) tyres- there isn’t much choice for 13 inch diameter.  Warren recommended the above rim widths for the tyres I went with.

Those tyres were Nankang Econex NA-1 175/60 R13 front and 205/60 R13 rear.

List 1B tyres are illegal for autosolos, hence my need for others, which constrained my choice.

I’m very happy indeed with the wheels.  The tyres seem OK too, clearly not as grippy as the CR500 tyres on my other wheels, which are illegal for autosolo.  Nevertheless, these Nankang tyres seem fine.

I hope this info helps others in the future.

  3. Hello all,

Please can the collect wisdom here help me with sizing a second pair of wheels for my (new to me) Superlight R?

Currently the tyres I have are Avon CR500, front 175/55 R13, rear 205/55 R13 on split rims.

I want to use my 7 for autosolos and these Avons are not legal for the events because autosolos don’t allow Motorsport UK ‘List 1B’ tyres.

Therefore, I’d like a second set of 13 inch dia wheels.  Some tyres I have found that would be autosolo legal are:

Nankang NA1 rear 205/60 R13 that will fit a 5.5-7.5 inch rim and 175/60 R13 for 4.5-6 inch width rims.  I don’t know if they are any good…..

What I would like to ask is where I can get some wheels that will fit and particularly what offset they need to be for my car?  The current wheels don’t have any markings on them to give me a clue.

I’d be happy with second hand wheels so long as they are decent condition.  There are folks on eBay selling new Minilight style wheels, but I don’t know what offset to ask for.

    Many thanks all.

    Dave
