  1. You will find your Elise 1.8 very much like the 150 as far as performance but the Elise is no where near the same driving experience, I went to Lotus Bell & Colvill the other week to drive the new Elise 250 and the Exige 380 V6 the 250 was boring compared to a 150 Caterham but the 380 I would say is a different thing but still not the same as a caterham for diect contact with the road but the 380 is very fast that I did like and sounds amazing but you would be without a license very quickly, if they didn't see you coming that would definitely hear you.

I just parted with my 150 and I must say the TB`s are wonderful it is one of the best engine set ups I have driven on a Caterham .

ChrisC above is the expert on setting up the engine, he kindly spent one afternoon tuning my car to perfection he really knows this engine inside out so I would suggest talking with him if you buy a 150.

I Like Chris am missing the 150 I think it is the best in this class and I am led to believe Caterham only changed to the 140 because the TB`s on the 150  worked out to be to costly to produce which I can imagine. You wont regret buying one and over a 125 there is no comparison the Sigma engine is very robust revving to 7,200 RPM and really fun to drive.

The main consideration is what gearbox and Differential, the five speed box is good with the standard 3.92 ratio diff but with a six speed box and the same 3.92 diff you will find it a bit revvy on the motorway but for country lanes its fine and the six speed box is more fun if you want to stay busy, a 3.6 ratio makes 7% difference and a 3.1 diff would make 14% difference the 3.6 is normally fitted when the six speed box is installed. The sixth gear on the six speed box is the same as fourth gear on the five speed box. So really depends on what type of driving you are going to be doing, no one with a Caterham likes motorways they are avoided at all cost.

The Premier Power upgrades to 175 & 200 bhp are said to be very good and the engine is lighter than the Duratec which is always going to be better  to drive on a Caterham the lighter the better.

The only negative of the upgrade is the 175 bhp  is £7500 and the 200 bhp £10,500 and that`s probably plus VAT you will have to check on the VAT part cant quite remember if that price was without or inclusive, I know the prices are correct as I spoke with them last week very helpful I must say and there demo car is available to try, it does sound very good and a lot of people have said so.

Let me know if you need anymore help with the 150 you are looking at, i was in the same position as you before buying but its only once you have driven a Caterham for a while will you know what you really like and that is different for everybody there is not one car that suites all.

    So suck it and see

  2. Cateham need to come up with a larger car/tank, an extra few inches at the back wont even notice.

    Tank

Back in the day when 100bhp was the norm the tank size was ok but with the power they are producing today soon you will be having to do a pit stop on  the track .Banghead

  3. Thanks for the comments chaps.

They have been on about 3 years, it would seem that it depends on whether the paint has faded from UV damage which would leave the paint under the decals in a darker more original condition I would have thought and the UV would have discolored the paint, so no chance of a match.

Some members have commented that they have heard cases where the paint work underneath has been left in worse condition.

Removing the badge to find out seems a good first step, i could just put new stripes back on if it shows a mark.

  4. I'm not familiar with the dry sump but would it be possible to use something that could be used to make a dip stick of some kind to measure the oil level.
  5. I have a quick release and a Momo suede at t present and yes Adam the quick release has its good and bad points it would be nice not to have to carry it around.Maybe the leather wheel would be softer on the hands for road

use but for track it would definitely give more grip, one of each maybe the way to go.

    Hi Chaps

Looking for a BMW Differential with 3.3 gear ratio

    Series 1 E81, E87, E90, or E46(2005 onwards)

Needs to be a 4 bolt flange

    168 Size

    Many thanks

  7. I had on good authority today: " mechanical oil pressure gauges were a good option on the K series engine's because the temperatures tended to fluctuate quite a bit, but on the sigma this was not a problem so not really necessary"

In addition, negating the issue of having oil in the cockpit seems a big plus.

Although I must say the double gauge showing pressure and temperature with the addition of a warning light look pretty cool.

  8. Hi Chaps

Is there a typical tyre wear pattern from hard road use? presuming the car is set up correctly.

Is the handbook spot on when it comes to alignment?

Does the ride height effect tyre pattern wear.

All comments would be much appreciated

  9. Spent the afternoon with Chris from the Essex7's who kindly offered to set up my Sigma 150bhp engine after me posting that it was spluttering badly at lower revs and thank you all for the advice it was the lambda sensor that had gone.

Anyway, Chris was quiet amazing, his knowledge of the sigma 150 was to say the least expansive, I was treated to a wonderful crash course on my cars inner being. Chris showed me how to balance the TB's(throttle bodies) and set the TBS(throttle body sensor) all aided by an MBE lead and a syncronometer all through computer software what an afternoon.

I'm over the moon the education was priceless the car is running like never before the throttle response is so smooth now, but more than that is Chris offering his time and knowledge to me I just can't thank him enough and just shows what a great spirit exists in the Lotus7 club me being a new member.

I feel I am qualified to change spark plugs if anyone needs help, other skills available soon.

  10. Disconnected the Lambda sensor and problem solved, wasted my time changing the ignition coil and spark plugs today, but all a learning curve.I understand now how the problem didn't exist at high revs because the lambda doesn't do anything at that rev range only on lower cruising and idle speeds.

Looking for the best lambda replacement if anyone has any advice or part number.

Thanks for the advice Chris C & huwp
