  1. I had a lot of issues with CC at the PBC & they seemed to think it was open cheque book time... Fortunately I had a lot of correspondence with Derek during the build & whose help was invaluable & also took lots of photo's. I had the first section of the pictorial guide which had a lot of mistakes within it (but gave you a false sense of security). Main issues I had were with wiring & cooling pipe distribution which the 'manual' contained wafer thin guidance... I made a fuss & they reduced my bill by 50% (but that was still a significant sum) spoilt the CC experience for me a bit as I went from super helpful Derek to what appeared to be the CC 'final hurdle' profit making department.... But loving my car & it has behaved impeccably, 2 years now!

  2. Well took a measure to it & looks like panic over... as suggested by Elie Boone i measured the distance between the Centre & the nut & they are both the same. Visually it looks different so I did it a couple of times (just because it still didn't look the same lol) with the same result! very bizarre & makes a bit of a mockery of the 8 turns on the thread guidance if the threads don't match on both sides.... Caterham must have disconnected & wound them inout as I cant see any other way they could have done it. Wasn't mentioned when it went for its post build check up.... I do recall it hardly managed it up the ramp when they picked it up for its PBC & had no sense of direction... I assumed it was just the tracking... must have been everything....

  3. yes I set it to 8 threads & it came back looking like this (which I hadn't clocked until they mentioned the tracking was out when they did the 1000 mile bolt check. I'll take a measure from the centre of the rod to the locknut. I've no idea what the camber actually is as it was done by Caterham South behind closed doors.

& sorry I meant wishbone ball joint, a picture paints a thousand words as Telly Savalas would say. I've also dropped Derek an e-mail to see what he thinks..

  4. Had my 1000 mile bolt check completed & everything was fine apart from the tracking which they adjusted & there was a noticeable improvement (ive only done 400 miles in it lol the project manager had completed the other 600...).

Had a quick look at the front suspension when I got back & one trakrod end has a lot of thread showing & the other one has none? Can this be right? I would have thought they would be identical? I know they started off as identical when I put it together as I had to take the suspension apart to do this...

I'm not sure how to add a photo to this query so I'll put two up on my blogg

  5. I used Dinatrol anywhere I could spray it in... & underneath the whole car. A bit shocking when you first put it onto a nice flat clean surface lol, but dulls off & whose going to be looking underneath... I'd rather it didn't go rusty...

  6. Footman have been really good & were also the most cost effective of all the company's I went to. Some of the so called 'specialist insurers' were less than helpful! The valuation thing confused me tho, I could understand it if it was an old car or historical car but straight 'out of the packet 'I would have thought would be a formality. I'll give Guy a ring anyway!

  7. Not exactly a technical enquiry & I'm not about to go on antiques road show...

Hopefully I'm going to be picking my 310 up next week now that the IV's done & I have my plate documents... however for some reason I need to get a insurance valuation for Footman James.. seems a bit strange as you can see what the price is on the Caterham website & I have my list of 'extras' clearly identified on the cost sheet of doom that I filled in when I bought the car.  does the lotus 7 club offer a valuation service??? & who do I contact...

    Hi Mr Morley,

Thanks for your email. Unfortunately I don’t have the authority to agree that, despite it being brand new we would need a valuation to guarantee the value. This cannot be done by anyone who has worked on the vehicle themselves (i.e. Caterham). Though the Lotus 7 club will surely have someone qualified to fill you form in for you. Congratulations on the IVA and please ask me any questions.

    Kind regards,

    George

  8. I've just completed my build & I enjoyed it a lot, I'm not a mechanical expert but not completely clueless either... However without the amazing bloggs everywhere & the patience of Derek it would have been an un necessary headache in a few area's. You ignore the build guide at your peril however it wrong foots you all the time. I also made the mistake of following the first part of the pictorial guide & ended up pretty much having to take it all apart again as a crucial fact (winding on the upper track rod ends equally) was omitted. Mine has now gone for the PBC & IVA but I'm fully expecting to find out I left off a crucial washer & everything needs to be taken apart... I'm quite diligent & can follow instructions so I shouldn't have to be worried about stuff like that...

& don't get me started on the pedal box cover... one of my rivnuts came loose & trying to get the box off (with the bolt stuck in) was an unnecessary challenge! this must happen a lot so why they use this method of attachment is beyond me...

The cost of getting the car built by Caterham isn't massive but I wanted to do it myself, I'm guessing most self builders take that view & that its not a cost saving reason. So I'm not sure then paying someone to build it 'with you' is that viable (unless the owner gives up & just wants it finished...).

  9. I have now got to the wing mirror stage of the build & now understand what the issue is... any chance of getting on the list for some standards (or superlight...)?

  10. I have one of these, its amazing. I keep it in the glovebox of my dodge ram (v8 5.7l...) first time I used it on a completely dead battery it started first time, you wouldn't believe it when you look at the size but it works! very solid & seems well made. I now have a new proper battery for the RAM... its a discontinued battery model & trying to get one in the UK was a challenge...

  11. Thanks for the input!, I'm going for Dinitrol underneath & then going to make a decision on the interior floor (probably the black hammerite product) at a later point... At the moment its a storage area & I'd have to decant elsewhere & there is no elsewhere at present...

  12. Hi

Just a quick question re rust protection on a new build (before I bolt too many bits on...)

    I've done:

Grot traps in engine bay with dintrol

dinitroled the inside of the de Dion tube

I know to do wings with underseal to prevent cracks

    So other big ticket items:

Do I underseal the whole underside of the floor pan? would seem a good idea but it looks so clean & shiny...at the moment...

Do I underseal the Diff enclosure area? this would seem a good idea too..

    propshaft tunnel?

I have my ACF 50 for the inner ali panels etc

Will varnish the wooden boot insert

These look like good tasks for my trainee pit crew... & will also distract me from the engine & gearbox project...

  13. Get yourself one of these too..

DBPOWER 600A Peak 18000mAh Portable Car Jump Starter Battery Booster Pack Smart Power Bank Charger with Compass, LCD Screen and LED Torch for Laptop Phone Tablet and More (Black/Red)

Saves getting the charger out... I have one that starts my Dodge Ram 5.7 litre v8 which quite often drains its battery in the winter if I don't drive it for a week or so, I just keep it in the glove box. You wouldn't believe something so small could turn the engine over... but it does! Unfortunately the truck doesn't fit in the garage & I have to park it down the road... so highly inconvenient to lug the battery around (I've now bought a new battery LOL, which took a while to track one down...).
