About the Venue

Castle Combe

Castle Combe is located off Junction 17 or 18 of the M4 and is signposted from both Junctions. The circuit has in the past hosted rounds of the British GT and Formula Three Championship but sadly in recent times noise restrictions have limited the racing schedule. Viewing at the circuit is fantastic, with access to virtually the whole outside of the circuit. The onsite facilities are basic but the food is very good and is traditional. There are no garages on site but the paddock does have a large amount of hard standing.

The circuit is ultra-fast with only the introduction of two new chicanes in 1999 helping to reduce the overall lap speed. The first section through Folly and Avon rise is very bumpy and picking a braking point can be tricky. It is important to make sure you use Avon rise to set up your approach to Quarry, which has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous corners in Britain. As you round Avon rise you will see a set of traffic lights on the fence line straight ahead. Initially head towards them as this will give you a good point to aim at before a late turn into Quarry. The approach to the Esses is quick and you can attack the kerbs here but be careful of the tyres on the inside apex. It is worth pointing out that if you over shoot the chicane you can return to the circuit via the access road and not a U-turn on the circuit.

The right hander that follows the Esses is very quick and should be approached from about two thirds width of the track on the entry. This leads onto the fast straight that runs down to Tower, which can be very intimidating because of the large solid wall straight ahead and will encourage you to brake early. Be careful not to take too early an apex as it is important to use the full width of the track, but be warned there is little run off here. Bobbies Chicane is a much slower approach than the first chicane but you can get back on the power early and stay on the power all the way through Westway and up to the braking point for Camp. A good place to judge your braking point is the pitlane entry road. Camp is a very fast final corner of the lap. Mind the small bump by the apex but carry good apex speed and use all the road on the exit.

Although Quarry has a reputation we’ve found the circuit to be one of the more incident free tracks that we visit. With such a small circuit limit over a long lap other cars are not an issue: in fact in terms of quiet track it doesn’t come any better! In addition, anyone spinning to the inside is usually met by a nice open field. The points where there are issues during racing, such as at Quarry, are normally covered well in the briefing which results in drivers being more sensible in those areas.

Quarry:

With one of the highest incident rates of any corner on any circuit in the UK, the combination of Avon Rise and then Quarry presents more of a challenge than may appear, and less run-off than at other corners. Please lose speed by braking before turning in to the approach to Quarry as cars will go light at the brow of the hill so any braking done at this point could cause the car to lock up and cause an unplanned visit to the tyre wall. Please consider yourself warned. Particular attention will be paid to this in the briefing.

Local fuel is 50 yards left out of the main entrance and Optimax is available 4 miles away on the A420.

What:         Exclusive Caterham and Lotus 7 Club “Novices Day” – with extended novice-friendly briefing session and extensive (free of charge) one-to-one instruction on the open Castle Combe Circuit.
Where:      Castle Combe is located close to the M4 motorway, some five miles west of Chippenham in Wiltshire. Further details can be found at  www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk 
Following the ongoing success of our Club “Novice Trackdays’” we are delighted to offer the chance to participate, early in the 2024 trackday season, in a similar event at Castle Combe - a very popular Caterham and Lotus 7 Club venue.
This Club-exclusive event is aimed specifically at members who class themselves as a novice or newcomer, or those who may need a comprehensive refresh after a substantial period away from any track activity.  It will be ideal for those who want to get on track with the Club in a friendly, supportive and structured environment, at a safe and well-equipped venue and on a circuit that offers lots of space, has an easy-to-learn layout and provides sufficient technical challenge to match growing levels of confidence as the day goes on.
As a result of the success of selling out our last four novice events we have again provided for a significant number of participants – up to 27 cars – whilst maintaining a superb ‘instructor to driver’ ratio.  Following the extended briefing session, track activity will start with members divided into groups, with no more than nine cars on track at any one time and with pre-allocated instructor slots.  Later in the day we will move to a controlled Open Pit Lane approach – though still with a limit to the number of cars on track and plenty of one-to-one instruction being available throughout.
The day is subject to a 100dB(A) noise limit measured statically prior to starting track activities. 
The cost to  participate is set at £225 for a car and main driver; an additional driver (who must be a Club member) will cost £65 and passengers will be welcome at £5 per head.
This will be a fantastic day that will take you through the formal steps, allow you to gain experience, build confidence and set you up for more trackday events. 
Places are limited so early booking is recommended!
Cars will not be permitted onto the circuit unless fitted with an MSA-acceptable rollbar or roll cage. In practice, this normally means the use of the ‘trackday’ or ‘FIA’ rollbars as supplied by Caterham Cars. What:           Experienced Only Trackday Drivers’ group running in parallel to the Club’s novices groups on the popular Castle Combe Circuit
Where:         Castle Combe is located close to the M4 motorway, five miles west of Chippenham in Wiltshire. Further details can be found at www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk
Running as an ‘event within the event’, this is an opportunity for experienced trackday drivers to join the Club’s novices trackday at Castle Combe. More than three hours of track-time is on offer for the ‘Experienced Group’ during the day, likely to be as follows:
0900 – 0930   30 minutes
1000 – 1015   15 minutes
1100 – 1115   15 minutes
1200 – 1215   15 minutes
1400 – 1430   30 minutes
1510 – 1530   20 minutes
1600 – 1700   60 minutes (all members OPL)
During the final hour, the track will be open to all Club members present  whearther novice or more experienced on an OPL basis (subject to Castle Combe’s normal “maximum cars on track at one time” limits) allowing the novice participants to finish their day with the experience of being on track alongside a group of more seasoned trackday drivers.
The day is subject to a 100dB(A) noise limit measured statically prior to starting track activities.
The price for this special opportunity is set at £225 for a car and main driver, with an additional driver (who must be a Club member) being welcome at a cost of £40 and passengers being charged £5 each. 
This event is limited to just 12 cars - so book now!
