Seats and Carpets (160 build)

I put the seats and harnesses in today. All fairly straight forward (after Derek put me on the right track after I tried to use the bottom 6pt harness eyelets by mistake). For the four point harness lap belts, the threaded holes on the sides are used, and I used the most forward hole.

The seats are Ok but you need to be a bit of a contortionist to get an Allen key to the back bolts.

I then set about sorting the boot carpet. I decided against using carpet in the passenger area after reading a few other blogs (it gets wet, smells, etc). However, I may consider putting it in at a later date (perhaps if the interior gets scruffy). I used Draper spay adhesive, and all the various triangles went in OK. Before sticking the carpet in I made a copy of the template. I might consider chopping up an old carry mat to provide a bit more padding in the boot area.

I tried to solve my non-starting problem by taking out a spark plug at taking a look. I'm pretty sure that no fuel is getting in.

I also managed to look at my strange ignition wiring. I think that the start button is simply wired in series with the output from the key barrel. This will be on my snagging list for the post build check.

Hi all small point if anyone is installing standard seats with normal seat belts the lower seat belt fitting goes into the forward hole not the rearward one because otherwise the seat will not adjust. I found out the hard way after bolting things up and no mention in the dreaded manual!

An e-mail from Derek solved the wiring on the key barrel (for cars with a start button). The key barrel is protected by a plastic cone but this just pops off with leverage from a screw driver.

The key barrel has 7 connectors (3 doubles and one single).

I hear your frustration... If you can turn the engine over but can't smell fuel on the plugs, then I imagine it must be fuel-related. You can tell if your fuel pump is working, but it'll be hard to check the fuel path into the throttle bodies. Can there be an air lock somewhere? Is the ECU stopping something happening?

Also, a long shot: have you an OBD2 reader? They are really cheap, link to your smartphone for easy diagnostics from the ECU. It's possible that it will tell you something is wrong. I intend to get one anyway.

Hi all well it seems as though I have the same problem. It will turn over strongly but simply not start. The immobiliser is off but the engine warning light continues to flash. I spoke to derek and he said the orange light will continue to flash until the engine starts. So he is going to send me and Simon a new ECU that he knows works for us to swap out. I will keep you all posted

Latest update is that they are out of stock of ECUs so it may take till the PBC to get this problem fixed, frustration and annoyance are now taking over

Oh no... It looks like we in the same boat. I wonder if Peter has had any more luck with his.

My engine makes a slight high pitched pulsing noise coming from the area of electronics around the engine inlet. Other than that nada.

Good call about the OBD2 reader Ned. I didn't realise that these were so reasonable. I think I'll pursue this...

Sounds like you are having issues similar to me, although mine was a sigma engine. The car would turn over and all the other electrics worked. I checked all the wiring and earthing, but no joy. It turned over but it just wouldn't fire. It turned out to be ECU related and the unit had to be replaced at the PBC. It may be worth checking with Derek to see if this is a possible cause.

I can't wait to see these 160s finished!

Yes cb4798, Derek reckon that Martin and I have an ECU related problem. Mine will probably be corrected at the PBC (on the 13th April).

When I remove the fuel hose, I noticed that there was fuel in there. So something is happening, but just no start.

sounds like history repeating, although when I removed my fuel hose I got a face full of fuel. Good luck with the rest of the build. I picked mine up last weekend - well worth the frustration.
