Mark Durrant Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Well I took my R500 to Track 'N' Road today for the two Steve's, Greenald and Pitcher to work their magic. The car has a standard R500 engine with revised cam timing and a bespoke 4-2-1 exhaust. At this point a big thanks goes to Dave Andrews for the cam timing settings and advice on the exhaust system. The exhaust was made by Graham Frankland of Exhausts By Design here and is a work of art which is mated to a Raceco can. Thanks also goes to James Fletcher for his help with adjusting the cam timing Now I drove the car for the first time in anger yesterday and whilst it was very quick above 5,500rpm, below this and in traffic it was a real pig, popping, banging and generally not very nice to drive. When I arrived Steve G suggested we do a power run straight off in order that we could do a comparison after they had worked their magic. The baseline run gave 241.7bhp @ 8833 and 161.7 lbft of torque @ 6967 and whilst the top line numbers were good, the tractability low down left a lot to be desired. So 5 hours with meticulous attention to detail followed with both Steve's making favourable comments about the power delivery of the engine. So the time came for a final power run and the figures obtained were 241.9bhp @ 8401 and 171.9 lbft @ 6082. There were other power runs but both Steve's were not happy with the results and they continued to fine tune the map until they were satisfied. But this only gives half the story and I took the car for a quick, well very quick test drive and all I can say it is ****ing awsome This car will now pull from 20mph in 6th gear and is so tractable at low revs that I can drive it onto my trailer without the need to use the throttle as the idle at 1,000rpm is that strong . The car will now respond from low down and is a joy to drive. Oh and it is so quick with a bark from the rollers that is so addictive 😬 😬 So a big thanks to Steve Greenald and Steve Pitcher and if you have a K, Vx, BD, Crossflow, Zetec or Duratec and want to get the best from the engine give them a call, its the best upgrade I could recommend for any engine with a remappable ECU *thumbup* Mark D Comp Sec Edited by - mark durrant on 20 Mar 2006 22:21:54
DSL Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Sounds like you lucked in & bought a good un Mark , thats a great output & should keep you busy on list 1A's this year 😬 😬 I have only heard good things about the two Steve's & have secured an appointment for later this year for the 1.9k *thumbup*
Chris__ Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Must be tired. Is this the MBE ECU that's been remapped? Pleased for you, sounds fapping great!
Gambo Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Great result Mark, I have much the same to say about the two Steve's myself. Top blokes. Did he tell the story about him Rolling road testing Senna's old Toleman Hart. 150 bhp at 7000rpm 350 at 7500rpm. RED 2.0 HPC
Casbar Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Me too, they worked their magic on my R300 engine, what a difference
Peter T Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Another fine job by the two Steve's *thumbup* Excellent results Mark, i bet it transformed the low rev running. 😬 Well done. *thumbup* Carbon Components Here K9 Composites
Mark Durrant Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 Chris Yes its an MBE but they can work with most other ECU's Peter I'll mail you the pin outs for the coms lead and the cam timing tonight. It will be interesting to see what difference the exhaust has made as this is the only difference between our two cars. Darren It was a handful on CR500's last night so I hate to think it its going to be like on a set of Stunners , but at least I have a set of slicks for track days 😬 Mark D Comp Sec
Peter T Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Thanks Mark, that will be great. Carbon Components Here K9 Composites
Mark Durrant Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 I forgot to mention engines always make more power if you take the secret ingredient with you a couple of packs on biscuits, one of which must be Hobknobs 😬 😬 Mark D Comp Sec
PaulK Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Mark, After reading your posting it sounds like my R500 would benefit from some Track N Road fettling - do you have a link/contact details? Also it's started to sound rather tappety when warmed up (it's done about 1800 mainly road miles). I'm taking it into Minister on Friday for a check up/service but just wondered if you had any ideas? Cheers, Paul
I reply to every thread Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Road 'N' Track Unit 9, Noakes Industrial Estate New Road Rainham Essex RM13 9EB Mobile: 07774 773824 E-mail: greenald@aol.com Is that Paul as in Alisa by the way?
Mark Durrant Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 PaulK Aves beat me to it with the contact details If your going to Minister on Friday they will be able to dianose the problem better than I can. If you decide on going to Track'N'Road you will need to fit a coms lead to the ECU plug. Steve G can supply these and make sure you mention it when you speak with him. If you local to Sutton your more than welcome to come along and experience the difference in performance, especially in the low to mid rev range. Mark D Comp Sec
PaulK Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Aves thanks for the details. Mark I may well take you up on your kind offer I'm only round the corner in Banstead. Paul
Mark Durrant Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 A few trips up and down the mad mile will demonstrate the difference 😬 Drop an email to my profile when your ready Mark D Comp Sec
AMMO Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Mark Top stuff! There is nothing worse than a badly mapped engine. Glad you can enjoy you car to the full now. There is a website were you can upload your dyno sheet it you want. It is www.dyno-plot.co.uk There are also lots of K's by DVA and runs done at Road'n'Track and Emerald. I have some Duratecs on there and hope to get a Blackbird, a Hyabusa and a Zetec on their soon. The nice thing is the ability to overlay plots. Lots of other engines too, Hondas, Toyotas and PC's 400 bhp Rover tow car! AMMO
Mark Durrant Posted March 22, 2006 Author Posted March 22, 2006 Ammo Thanks for the heads up on the website and when I get a spare 5 minutes I'll scan it in and upload it to the site but this is not likely to be until early next week as life is fairly hectic this week. Mark D Comp Sec
dannylt Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 I have a now defunct MBE comms lead for a small donation to NTL. Think it was absolutely bog standard. Didn't work with the Emerald for some reason.
metal mickey Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Danny, if you have no other takers for the comms lead then i'll have it off you Drop me a mail and we can sort it out. Mike.
ashaughnessy Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Mark, you say the engine is standard except for cam timing and exhaust. Did the engine run sweetly before you made these two changes or was it running badly when it was fully standard? Or haven't you driven it when it was in standard form (you mention driving it in anger for the first time, I'm not sure if you mean first time after the changes). Anthony
Peter T Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Mark has driven the car before the exhaust and cam timing and mapping session, but like my R500 it is pretty undrivable at certain revs, and makes for a horrible drive. I am booking it into Steve Greenauld now i have had a lambda boss welded into the collector. A few changes can transform the car, and being a generic map means it is only good on the engine they mapped it for. Carbon Components Here K9 Composites
Mark Durrant Posted March 23, 2006 Author Posted March 23, 2006 Anthony The car was a pig to drive at low revs before I made any changes to the cam timing or exhaust and was no better after these were made. However, the transformation came after the rolling road session and the only point where the two power plots met, before and after, was at peak power and now the car is a complete dream to drive .
