Bewls Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 My handbrake button is stuck in and no amount of WD40 etc seems to shift it. It's a "under the dash" type handbrake. Is it best/easiest to just replace the whole handbrake arm and mechanism, and if so where do I buy one from, Caterham? Any other ideas before I order a replacement? I wouldn't be so concerned, I only use it every once in a blue moon, but the MOT is due next month. Thanks, Joe UPDATED: I ordered a new handbrake from Redline Components, however, as has been mentioning, it needs a bend put in it. Is there anyone, or does anyone know of anyone, who could bend in it for me 🤔 Edited by - joseph on 20 Mar 2006 13:05:45 Edited by - joseph on 3 Apr 2006 20:23:09
Dave H Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Joe, The underdash handbrake is not known for its efficiency, so it needs to be in good order to get through an MoT. It's not difficult to strip down to free the button - BUT - take it apart carefully, noting how each part fits, 'cos it is a complete b*****d to reassemble. Is the button actually stuck down, because it does screw in and out to adjust. If it is stuck down, and the cable itself is free - i.e. the handbrake works, but just won't lock, then either its been pushed in too far, and you'll have to dismount it and push the button out, or the spring that pushes the button out has become misplaced. I doubt Caterham will stock them now - give Mick at Redline a call on 01883 346515, they stock almost everything for the older Seven, and should be able to help. Dave H
elie boone Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 If you order anew one i think you need to bend it yourself and if bend a little bit to far it will give those kind of problems. You can push with a screwdriver on the other end to get the button back out. Just be cearefull next time that you don't push the button all the way, just enough to release the locking mechanism and it should be fine.
Tony Whitley Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Mine does it occasionally. The first time I stripped it all down but then I found that a sharp tap with a hammer made the button pop out
Bewls Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 I'm thinking it must be the spring mechanism thats gone, I've tried trying to lever the button out with my smallest screwdriver and the button seems loose but it just wont come out. Next question, where do I start in taking it to bits?
Tony Whitley Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 There are two bolts through the handbrake - a big one that comes from the engine compartment (behind the battery) and one that's welded to the chassis. Undo those and then you can pull the handbrake off and slide the cable free. Getting it all back in again is another matter....
