tiddy1 Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 After numerous starter failures on my k-series I finally bit the bullet and bought one of the new caterham 'Bosh' starters and it was mighty expencive at just over £300. (and before you say you should have gone to Brise, a brise will not fit my engine/ exhaust combination ) has anyone tried sourcing these from bosh or a motor factors, as they look fairly standard, do we know what car they come from? Hope it solves the starting problems Simon
Peter T Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Why not give me the part number and see if we can cross reference it ? Carbon Components Here K9 Composites
Roger Ford Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Allegedly, Caterham will price match if you can source the same component cheaper elsewhere. Will be interesting to see if they live up to it!
7 wonders of the world Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 This could be really useful to a lot of people, I was just going to order my Magnatron (Skoda version) direct........... but I think I'll wait and see now !
Peter T Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Maybe another bulk buy syndrome. Carbon Components Here K9 Composites
tiddy1 Posted March 20, 2006 Author Posted March 20, 2006 The cheek is that you pay all this money and it still says 'bosh re-manufactured unit' is there such a thing as a new starter
Dirty Den Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Hi Simon, It would be great if you could share the part number - my solenoid is wrapped with heat wrap but I still get the K-series click, especially at trackdays. Cheers, Den http://www.dens7.co.uk
tiddy1 Posted March 20, 2006 Author Posted March 20, 2006 the main numbers on the label are 0 986 018 240 then 12V 1.4KW also has 0 001 108 111 on the label and 25286 on the front casting as well as 1 005 821 270 cast into the front Simon
tiddy1 Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 I have looke through the bosch parts lists and the closest I can find is a 0-001-108-101 which is on a VW passat 1981-1983, but will try the dealers later Simon
F355GTS Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 You may have problems fitting this starter on older cars with a competition exhaust as the No. 4 primary fouls the staer casing, of course you can adjust it using Angus's 'hit it with a big hammer' method Mark
Frank D Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Hi, is it this one? http://www.woodauto.com/Unit.aspx?Man=BOSCH&Ref=0001108111 Frank
SouthernBanana Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 *If* the woodauto link is the correct part, at £108, then I think Caterham owe you a huge goodwill payment. Markups of 200% (or more) are a bit naught in my opinion!
tiddy1 Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 yes thats the one, the kit from caterham included 4 bolts and the adapter plate which is a bit thicker than the old one so by my reckoning its £206 for the plate and bolts!!!!!!! looks like its going straight back . Simon
Peter T Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Cough, cough. Carbon Components Here K9 Composites
Frank D Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Simon, whow thick is the adapter plate from Caterham? Frank
Throbin Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Are we certain this is the part then? Does anyone know how much jus tthe adapter plate is from CC. I think I need a new starter so this would be interesting to know. Cheers, Throbin
Mick Day Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Tiddy: have another look at the link. The starter from CC is 1.4kw & the one at Wood Auto is 1.0kw.
andymal Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 From the picture it looks like the solenoid will be below the starter. Has anybody knocked the solenoid off yet? It must be very vulnerable if it is below.
tiddy1 Posted March 28, 2006 Author Posted March 28, 2006 Mick picked up tthe starter on friday, and although the pic shows 0.9 Kw the one I have is 1.4 kw, and identical to the one from CC. and £66 +vat +£ 20 if you do not have an exchange unit. I will try and fit it soon, I have the 4-1 race exhaust which is very tight to the engine so we will see I measured the spacer and the new one is 28mm thick, I am not sure of the old one but I will either make an additional spacer plate or buy a new one from CC, I believe they are about £32 will let you know how it goes the solenoid is below but so is the one on the magnatron and it will not stick below the sump, so no worries thier Simon Edited by - tiddy1 on 28 Mar 2006 06:50:00
tiddy1 Posted March 29, 2006 Author Posted March 29, 2006 Bristol auto electrica 0117 971 2242, but you need to ask for the bosch one, code B01824 total cost £100 Simon
tiddy1 Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 Just fitted the Bosh starter, I had to add 6mm spacer between the bell housing and the standard caterham adapter plate ( i did not want to fork out £32 for a new plate until I knew it would work) I did need some 'adjustment' to the no 1 and 2 primaries but eventually fitted fine Works a dream, really spins the engine fast, as yet no hot start issues but have notgiven it too much stick only problem is that I managed to disturb the exhaust gasket so now it is blowing, popping and banging ☹️ sounds like my old crossflow ! Will have to re-do the gasket, but of course that means taking the water rail off etc etc So to summerise £ 66+vat and a 6 mm spacer gets you a £300 caterham race starter, it would be fun to try and get a price match from caterham ps my exhaust is one of the older 4:1 race units which is very tight compared to the new ones so I reckon that this unit will fit anywhere that a magnetron starter fits Simon
Jason Plato Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Simon - you coming to Llandow on 29th / 30th so we can take a look ?
