MikeK Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 After perusing the Burton catalogue, I have concluded that my Seven has the Type 2 light duty 4 speed gearbox as fitted to all MK1/2 escorts (it has cast iron integral bellhousing). Can anyone advise how much power this gearbox will take? It seems that the 2000E 'bullet' gearbox has a "medium duty" capacity, and presumably will take more power. It also has the same 7/8" 20 spline input shaft as the Type 2. Is this gearbox a direct swap with the type 2 in a Seven? I don't think the type E (often referred to as the Rocket) can be such a straight swap as it has a 1"x23 spline input shaft (I guess there is an alternative clutch that would work- would it otherwise be a straight swap?). I'm trying to understand what may or may not be a good/useful buy off ebay! Many thanks, MikeK
cskip Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 I'm going to regret saying this, but I am running the Escort Sport box (Type 2) with a Crossflow with approx 165bhp and no problems so far. You could always go straight cut with the type 2 here I know someone who has fitted a Rocket box to a 7 in replacement of a type 2. It does require altering the gearbox mount, the prop and the remote gearlever linkage, as the Rocket is longer than the type 2. Skip. I.Mupferit Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 If you are going to all that trouble then why not just fit a Type 9 5 speed 🤔 Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬
Barry Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 I have this Escort Sport 'box with a Quaife straight cut cluster, lovely ratios, the zetec it's mated too producing about 175BHP. Whether to go for a 5-speed of not depends on a few things, what diff ratio you have, what sort of power the engine makes. Then the standard type 9 ratios may not be suitable, and if you go for a straight cut type 9 then you also (probably) have a straight-cut 5th, giving plenty of whine at cruising speeds. 4 speed 'boxes don't suffer from this as top is direct.
JampJ Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Have a word with BGH Geartech. 01580 714114. Cheers J&J JFDI (Just F*****g Do It)
Area Representative Crudders Posted March 20, 2006 Area Representative Posted March 20, 2006 This question came up at a recent (ish) Quaife factory tour and the reply from the experts was "about 150BHP". Having said that a mate ran a 185BHP Roger King X/F through one without any problems. The Ital axle would probably break first I also have the Escort Sport box with a SCCR Quaife gearset and I love it. I'm only putting 135BHP through it but after 33k miles it's still sweet as a nut (Oh gawd, that's torn it). Crudders
MikeK Posted March 20, 2006 Author Posted March 20, 2006 I was basically wanting to understand whether there was a stronger gearbox that would be a direct swap if mine was to let go. But from the feedback, hopefully it won't (touch wood etc. etc.)! And if it does, it looks like another Type 2 would probably survive for some time, or I could get the Quaife conversion. So i have some options, some cheap, some less so.... which is excellent. Thanks all very much. MikeK PS- Brent; one of your five speed conversion kits is hanging on my garage wall . But I would want a proper type 9 with optimised ratios etc. before going down that road, and that is just too expensive at the moment.
