CageyH Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 Which works best in a 7? Anybody tried both? I see that Starcom 1 have now launched an Advanced version.
Dirty Den Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 I've got a Starcom and it's brilliant. For me, the main plus points were price (and there's a club discount as well) and the fact that adapters to take "walkman" style headphones were available cheaply. It really is an excellent bit of kit for the price - did a trackday at Goodwood with it a while ago, anything below 80mph-ish was absolutely crystal clear - above that it was a little noisy, but still audible. All in all, I think What's new in the "advanced" version? Den http://www.dens7.co.uk
John Howe Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 We have a couple of Autocom units and have been very pleased with them, also the back up service from the manufacture. I have mine linked in with bluetooth for the phone, Garmin Quest and my iPod, all at the same time. It is also possible to add Road Pilot or similar into the circuit. Sensitivity of the mic is adjustable to reflect speed and wind noise. One unit is hard wired into the Seven and the second unit is battery powered, being used with more of a roving commission, including cutting the lawn or driving a tractor. Casbar Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 I have had a Starcom for over a year now, its a great bit of kit! Support is brilliant! I went for Starcom after trying a mates Autocom, and I think the Starcom is a better option, because is works on an open mike system, therefore you don't have to mess around setting levels to get the mike to work at different wind levels. I do use a Push to Talk for the PMR though, that also stops me having to set up the levels to stop the radio transmitting when I'm talking to the passenger. Use the kit with Brooklands, but I have the practice headsets when not using helmets
metal mickey Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 Can't comment on the starcom but the Autocom I have is very good.I use it with a phone and mp3 player when touring and its been excellent. When several cars run together we also use motorola radios - thats superb and allows us to keep in touch and stay together Also as John says, backup from Autocom has been very good.
Casbar Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 Just to add, I use mine with MP3, phone, and PMR. The two kits do the same job, but have a different way of doing it. Find someone who has both, and try them both. Autocom did have a comparison of both kits, but to be honest, its marketing bull**it, as the recording they have of the Starcom, is not represenative at all, its really quiet at all speeds, and does work well
rgrigsby Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 Another for the Autocom, I've had one for 2-3 years and it's been great, it's a tough unit as well and has been fine in my aeroscreened car. Having said that I've heard that the Starcomm is pretty good as well Rob G www.SpeedySeven.com
Jimchap Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 Yet another one for autocom I have mine set up with a bluetooth system for the phone and linked with my I-Pod. The adustable sensitivity for the mics is very good and enables easy override of music. They keep the ears warm as well which is no mean most of the year up here.
CageyH Posted March 16, 2006 Author Posted March 16, 2006 Thanks guys. I am going for the Starcom, as they do the lightweight headsets I am after. (Code PR 002) I don't want the Peltor style cans for touring in hot climates (South of France in the summer).
CageyH Posted March 16, 2006 Author Posted March 16, 2006 It would seem that the Starcom 1 Advance includes bluetooth support as standard as well as the following features: StarCom1 Advance builds on the success and the experience... The design brief was make it better, smaller and add every feature and control StarCom1 users have ever asked for. The result is a bike system that has no compromise and no competition. Less than half the size of StarCom1, StarCom1 Advance has a dedicated navigation input, user balance control, user selectable sidetones, automatic volume, vox and mic sensitivity, advanced audio quality and advanced microphone noise reduction systems. The advanced design incorporates AMS (automatic microphone sensitivity) a system that turns the microphone volume up when you talk and down when your quiet, and the levels are automatically adjusted to suit the road speed and noise level. Seems quite good!
martinwhitcher Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 I swapped from Autocom to starcom because it is better at speed. IMHO starcom is easier to use and set-up in all conditions full face helmet and more inportantly Open faced helmet. Martin MW 51 CAT Superlight No.171 now known as:Superlight DVA 207

Casbar Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 😳 😳 😳 Don't know what you are talking about, but I can confirm that the Starcom system works really well
Dizz Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Rob Martin I was SO impressed, I bought one (Starcom, that is) *thumbup* It's very good I can now chat to the misses at 70mph and it's clear as a bell - there have to be some drawbacks I guess Hope you're well. Papillon SV DD02CAT
