No 3 Cat Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 I had a 'gentle' coming together last week in my Caterham, the impact I sustained was a nudge to my front right tyre. The upshot is that on inspection of the steering system there is a crack on the steering rack bridge (atleast I think that is what it is called!!) underneath the right hand clamp. Any sugestions as to where I should take the Cat to get fixed and how much this is going to set me back???? I am based in London. Cheers, Mark
Dazzled Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 I damaged mine during my build ( ...it was a bloody stupid thing to do but the damage would have been worse if a mates hand hadn't taken most of the impact as the car fell off the trolley jack....) Mine had a small crack where one of the welds had separated. Found a local welder who mended it in situ in about 30 mins for the princely sum of a pint of London Pride. It was made easier as the radiator had at that stage not been fitted. If yours has cracked as a result of a "nudge to the front tyre" I'd carefully check the rest of the front corner as well - surely the rack mounting plate won't have been the only bit damaged.
Myles Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 I had my steering-rack bridge replaced by Arch (mine was deformed after a shunt). The physical repair costs were of the order of £120+theft IIRC - but this was with the front end completely stripped. You really want to get this fixed properly - if it breaks again when you hit a pot-hole at 80mph, you'll be in trouble. Arch could probably sell/send you a new bridge for you to get welded in locally if that's more convenient. Project Scope-Creep is live... Alcester Racing 7's Equipe - 🙆🏻™ Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
No 3 Cat Posted March 12, 2006 Author Posted March 12, 2006 Thanks for your posts - will make sure that I have another good inspection of the chassis/steering system but atleast it sounds that it is not terminal or too costly!! Mark
