dave1968 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Following on from my earlier thread re running stickier tyres on track days general consensus appears to be that I 'should' be ok with existing apollo set up but the sensible thing to do is get it dry sumped... I know that Caterham have recently launched a revised dry sump option that is cheaper then the previous but wondered if anyone had actually fitted one / got any experience of them / got any opinions etc Ta
rgrigsby Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I could be wrong but isn't it the same dry sump set-up but without the bell housing tank? instead it just uses a seperate tank? Rob G www.SpeedySeven.com
Racingshoe Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Correct. It's much cheaper because they don't supply the bellhousing tank with the new kit. You have to find a supplier for an external tank & find a suitable place in your engine bay to put it. Dave Jackson has an interesting solution that utilises the space occupied by the heater...... dave1968 Posted March 8, 2006 Author Posted March 8, 2006 Rob, im sure your right, what im after is finding out of anyone has fitted the new system (ie dry sump plus seperate tank rather dry sump+ the bell tank)
Allen Payne Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I fitted one a few years ago by shortening the passenger footwell and using a pace tank What do want to know? Edited by - Allen Payne on 8 Mar 2006 10:32:19
dave1968 Posted March 8, 2006 Author Posted March 8, 2006 Rik, the 'new' lower cost version (£1150) does include a tank but its a remote tank (I think its possible also to buy without a tank and supply your own as you suggest) Allen, what I wanted to know was has anyone bought and installed the new lower cost version as supplied by CC (ie with their remote tank), do they work OK, is the installation a total pain etc
Nifty Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Is it possible to fit one of these whilst retaining the heater and the longer passenger footwell 🤔 Can the tank go where the Apollo sits? Keep off the straight and narrow 😬
Tom_C Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I doubt there would be space Nifty. Doesn't the tank hold about 4.5 litres? Cheers Tom FH54WLX - only the car supports ManU, honest!
davef Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Dave, This has been recently discussed on here: http://www.blatchat.com/T.asp?id=98959 - could be worth asking on that thread/emailing direct. Dave
mav Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 A kindey shaped tank will fit where the apollo is, and is used by many with the pace dry sump system.
Nifty Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Does that involve moving the expansion tank Mav 🤔 Keep off the straight and narrow 😬
martinwhitcher Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Yes, you have to side-step the expansion tank. I run this with a airbox no worries Martin MW 51 CAT Superlight No.171 now known as:Superlight DVA 207
caterhamnut Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Any pics guys - also interested in this for sometime in the future, but currently run an apollo & heater.... www.mycaterham.com here 91,000 miles -1st 1.6k Supersport, '95 Motor Show car
Wahey Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I've got this setup with the massive kidney shaped tank around where the apollo used to be - takes about 9 litres or somethng daft. It seems to work so far. I didn't fit it so can't give advice on what's involved.
Jason Plato Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 9 Kg's over the front axle didnt appeal to me ! . The chap on the pace stand tried telling me that people had experienced greater turn in grip as a result of the extra weight over the front wheels 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 I left a little puddle on his display flooring following that one 9 litres !!!! FFS ! The Caterham/ Pace tank holding 6 liters or so in place of the footwell is well proven in other applications - there should be no problem . Just order the tank from Pace directly and ask for a boss to be welded in for the temperature sender here is C7 TOP Powered by Special K, Tweeked by this lunatic here South Wales AO
david nelson Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I have just finished fitting one. the sump and pumps are as any CC DS. the remote tank made by pace 6.5l easy clean tank. shorten the foot well.blank it off. tank sits on a sheet of ally. connect hoses and job done. well if i was ding it again it would be that simple. There are no real instruction but with a little help from fellow class 3 sprinters most of the tricky stuff was explained. They came over one afternoon. Mods i did: bose for temp sender and routed hose around engine bay not over gear box. hope this helps. David
Wahey Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Dave - just to add - it doesn't run with 9 litres in it - just that's how big the container is to give an idea of size. It runs on somewhere between 5.5 & 6.5 litres. As I personally weigh approx 100kg's and sit on one side of the car, if I was that bothered about weight & would look to lose it from myself first as there is a good 30kg's to shed from my middle area. 6kg over the front axle doesn't concern me in the slightest and as the suspension was changed at the same time the sump was fitted I can't even comment on any handling differences the sump would make.
Nifty Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I'll be saving some weight by ditching the cast iron radiator in favour of the ali job 😬 😬 Is it possible to fit the bell housing tank with a heater and long passenger footwell in the car? I don't want to get rid of the heater for those frosty touring mornings but want the dry sump benefit on track. Keep off the straight and narrow 😬
Wahey Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 As far as I am aware, the bell housing tank dry sump system doesn't affect any space issues - it's just a direct replacement so heater & long footwell shouldn't be a problem. I went for the kidney remote tank as I have a long passenger footwell too so didn't want a tank there. I don't have a heater but I do have room for one. I reckon I saved about £500 going for my setup rather than the bellhousing tank from caterham.
