Red Line Components Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Any recommendations out there for reasonably priced milling machines - it needs to be capable of machining ally bar, only moderate use and reasonable price. Or sites for 2nd hand machines. Are the Micro Mills any use ? Cheers Chris Edited by - minty on 7 Mar 2006 21:18:48
Rob Morris Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 What power supply have you available? 240v or 415v........? Just bought a Bridgeport copy BRAND NEW with digital read out etc for £5k delivered. Now 6 months old and not missed a beat! May have a tired Bridgeport for sale if interested for around £750?
Rob Morris Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Quite tired but not dead.......sadly 415v motors so the cost of re-winding would exceed it's value!
Red Line Components Posted March 7, 2006 Author Posted March 7, 2006 oh well... any advice on the smaller machines?
Sheds Moderator Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Ex schools ones are nice. If you have the space tho' buy the Bridgeport and fit a SH 240 motor. BPs are ace, if big. Have a chat with Rundle Engineering, near (?) Boston/Spalding way.
Normans_Ghost Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I bought a lathe with milling machine from Machine Mart. £1000 with all the options. Norman Verona, 1989 BDR 220bhp, Reg: B16BDR, Mem No 2166, the full story here You and your seven to The French Blatting Company Limited
Rob Morris Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Try looking on Excel Machine Tools web-site.......they manufature a range of cheap solid machines.
Wile7 Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Ex school ones are nice !!??!! Careful Boss! Servicing is not always great and they get a hammering from kids - beds get milled, tolerances go and they mill MDF and woods on them too (for mould making) which can screw up threads and things. Not that I ever did that of course.... 😬 Certainly a Bridgeport is a good bit of kit , but quite large and heavy! Have a look to purchase from an ex plastics manufacturing company where the machines have a 'softer' life in terms of spindle pressures and rates of feed etc. Do you need horizontal or vertical capability? A dividing head? Chuck size? A digital read out (x,y,z planes) or not? Make a list then go. Good luck! Dave Dave Ardley.
