Stripping painted ali

Myles

Recommended Posts

It looks like I'm probably not going to bother painting my repanelled car when I get it back from Arch - but I don't expect to put too much effort into polishing it.

I've got a spare bonnet that I intend to press into service - but it's painted.

If I strip it, is it going to end up with a similar finish to bare, untreated ali - or does the pre-painting etching bugger-up the surface???

I think any chemical thats likely to remove the paint will discolour the ali, leaving you with alot of polishing. It would be possible, you would just have to go up through the grade, alot of hassle around the vents... *thumbdown*

I work at a Aston Martin resto company and we send all removable panels to a farmer who has converted a sylo tank to strip paint. (I think he's based in the Newport Pagnell area) The panels come back a dull grey-ish.

If you want i'll get the number tomorrow at work.

As far as i know, paint stripper is either strong alkali (which will disolve ali) or methylene chloride (aka dichloromethane). That gives you cancer if you breath too much of the vapour (very volatile) and produces phosgene gas if heated, so dont smoke near it or use it with a hot air gun. I cannot see that it would do much to damage ali.

Nitromors and then finer and finer wet and dry, followed by Autosol or equivelent.

I stripped my entire car *eek* (It took ages to do!), only to discover a repaired tear in the ali rear panel *mad*

I guess thats why it was painted in the first place.

I was originaly planning to get it back to bare ali.

After removing the paint I polished several test areas with very good results.

Then I found the repair so decided to paint it Kawasaki green 😬

Ian, It's OK, but you could get rather bored waiting for it to do the job properly.

Anyway, I've disposed of the gallons of used brake fluid I got through with my brake woes last year... *wink*

I think the first stage will be to see how horrible the current bonnets look with bare ali...

fwiw I have just stripped mine, in preparation for a respray. The vast majority of the Ali does not appear to have been "etched" or abraded at all before being painted (perhaps that's why it was so badly stone chipped?)

Some areas needed 2 treatments but about 80% of the paint came off very easily.

I will be respraying the car myself, if you decide against the bare ali look give me a shout as I might be able to help ....

Myles,

Did a complete DB6 body shell with Nitromors and can vouch for its effectiveness.

IF project Diff takes off bring the bonnet and I'll do that while your spannering etc

It would make a fairer repayment for your ewfforst

Grant - I don't mind stonechip as a colour - but only if someone else painted the damned thing in the first place.

I've thrown a whole stack of money at the repairs/rebuild/upgrades this winter - but I'm drawing the line at paint... Probably... *smile*
