noise under breaking

Jon, what type of brake? If it's drums it can be the return springs (but you'd hear that when stationary.

I'm a bit confused as you say it happens at speed and when he releases pedal. Are you saying it only happens at speed after braking (ie when taking foot off pedal)

Quite difficult to come up with a diagnosis with so little information.

We're looking at a clonk when coming off the brakes when moving but not stationary, possibly but not definately from the rear?

Clonking could be A frame bushes, though you'd get that under acceleration to, same with diff clonk.

Assume you've checked the pads, and that calipers are secure?

Have you tried jacking the car up and having a look underneath / checking everything for play?

It could be radius arm bushes, or the de-dion. The clonk could be the tube hitting the diff if something is moving due to a bush having gone ot a fracture. The tube runs very close to the diff and the two will touch if something goes out of spec. I would give it a thorough visual check over.
