Archie Procter
Do petty struts come in different sizes for standard and tall cages/rolbars? TIA
Area Representative Richard Price Posted January 4, 2006 Area Representative Share Posted January 4, 2006 I think there's only one petty stut. I comes in two parts and you normally need to drill your own fixing, to bolt the two parts together - If you're using a petty strut that has previously been used with a tall bar, the second drilled hole would be obscured by the outer part of the strut and would not compromise the strength of the assembly. However going the other way (to a tall bar) where the strut would need to be longer, you'd have an exposed hole and a potential weakness in the strut. This weakness would only be minor, as the strut, should it be needed, would only be in compression or tension, but a scrutineer may not like it! Archie Procter
I've got a full (tall) cage but am thinking about getting a strut as well for additional stiffness and as left hand side impact protection - so it's not required for protection in the event of a roll. Sounds like it should be OK - thanks for the advice.
Area Representative Richard Price Posted January 4, 2006 Area Representative Share Posted January 4, 2006 How would you fix the strut on to the cage? The FIA bar has a boss welded into the LHS rear brace that the petty strut bolts onto. Unless the rear brace was in the same plane, the angle of the lower mountings would also be wrong. Archie Procter
ah - that might present a problem then. I've seen the petty strut used with a cage on a de-dion car, but then again I've seen LH side impact bars for de-dions too... ☹️ This picture shows LA cars with both FIA bars and petty struts (the back 2 cars) and full cages - what do you think? andy_h
I'm sure the petty strut I've got has a couple of different positions with a through nut & bolt (looks like as originally made and not a 'homer' to me). But then I bought my FIA bar and strut 2nd hand and I've not used the strut yet other than to ckeck it fits. Andrew, you're wecome to drop by and try my strut out for a measure to see if a normal strut fits a tall FIA bar. I've also got the center mounted strut if you've the bolt hole beyond the gear stick to bolt it too. I've never seen LH side impact bars, but then from your picture the front car doesn't seem to have a drivers side bar either - passed by scrutineers!? Archie Procter
Andy - thanks for the offer, but I don't have the car right now and it's a live axle in any case so the petty strut may be different 🤔 - the cages are very different. And it has a cage not FIA bar... On a bit of checking, the LH side impact bars I've seen are on the new style cages the R400s race with. The impact bars on both sides are built into the cages. I had thought (I think from on here) you could get LH ones for de-dion cages to be fitted to LHD race cars - though I could be completely wrong of course 😳 BTW the car at the front in the pic now has a side impact bar, and a full cage. It's now mine
Archie Procter
oh, and there's no requirement to have a side impact bar nor a full cage to get through Grads class scrutineering, though both are highly recommended .
Archie Procter
update - apparently you can't fit a petty strut with a full cage on a LA car without having to drill through the roll cage, thus compromising its integrity (seems the FIA bar has a pre-prepared hole for insertion of the strut) - so thanks for the offers and advice but no dice.
