martin b Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Hi All Does anyone have experience of noise levels attainable with a standard BDR with standard caterham side exit comp silencer, I am guessing 105db is possible, this car does seem to have a louder induction noise than my old x flow so I may have to guess a little higher. If I used a Techcraft/ Raceco silencer what level could I reasonably expect. I appreciate I probably wouldn't achieve as low as 98db but would 100 be possible 🤔 Ever tightening noise limits are restricting my off road enjoyment. Many Thanks Martin
Graham Perry Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Martin, Unlikely you will get to 100 easily I think, but I have never owned a BDR so can not be sure. Perhaps Norm or someone else can comment ? I find with my crossflow that the noise comes mainly from the inlets and not the exhasut anyway. so am assuming the same with a BD. My car has been tested many times and averages about 103. Mitigating future noise issues are one of the reasons I am converting it to throttle bodies and an airbox Edited by - Graham Perry on 3 Jan 2006 22:50:15
Normans_Ghost Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Never measured mine. However it can be described as bloody loud! Norman Verona, 1989 BDR 220bhp, Reg: B16BDR, Mem No 2166, the full story here You and your seven to The French Blatting Company Limited
Bilbo Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Ever so loud if its lost the wadding ❗ Mine hits 105db on 2/3 revs then that's were the power really starts and the noise Currently I have a Racetech repackable at one event Dave Jackson, while in his car next to me at the start of a sprint, asked me If I had any..... yep he was right when I got home took it apart its was a mere handfull. 😳. On the err fast long run back I had forgotten my ear plugs, hate anyway, and lost 80% of my hearing for 3 days . Easy way to check the silencer's wadding is to tap it with a hammer if it 'rings' you need a new one or repack the old one in my case. 'Can you hear me running' ......... OH YES and its music to my ears 😬 😬 😬 1988 200 bhp, 146 ft lbs, 1700cc Cosworth BD? engineered by Roger King, on Weber's with Brooklands and Clamshell wings, Freestyle Motorsport suspension.
martin b Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Well I hit it with a hammer, I need to buy a new silencer now is it's got a big dent in it 😬 Oops not that hard then
Normans_Ghost Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 After repacking the racetech 3 times I gave up and got Metel Micky to make me a Raceco titanium jobbie. So far so good and it's cut the noise level down, well a bit anyway. Bilbo Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Martin Well I had intended to type spanner.... nverona Well I would say my Racetech lost its wadding FAR earlier than I expected think that was under 5000 miles and it obviously needed re-packing far earlier. Think this the reason I started getting large flame out on lift and kept thinking it was a fuel problem. Repacked the silencer and they stopped so big empty space to fill with fuel residue 🤔. martin b Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 Bilbo, don't worry, only joking Did want to ask you a few questions about sprinting but your blatmail isn't working 🤔 So thats a no to a racetech Raceco is ££££ Any other alternatives 🤔 Martin
Bilbo Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Hi Martin Looking at my performace the only advice I can give is how to come LAST in group 5. I missed all the events last year.... Normans_Ghost Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Martin, it may be worth investing in Ammo/Mickeys silencer. It may be expensive to start with but I suspect it'll work out cheaper in the long run. I can't remember what Chris Wheeler charges for packing but it's around £25. I repacked 3 times in about 15 months. I'm not saying the Reactech isn't good, just that at high revs on a BDR it burns the packing. The other advantage is weight. When I picked up the Titanium unit I fell over backwards as I expected it to be much heavier. Luckily Micky had had to rush of to a fire so I did this trick unseen. metal mickey Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 naughty naughty Norm 😬 Glad its doing the job .
Bilbo Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Hi nverona I'm not saying the Racetech isn't good, just that at high revs on a BDR it burns the packing. Must say I agree. In defence of Racetech I had 2 Caterham silencers before this one and they were both empty when I changed them. I rather think they both had been empty for ages before I changed them 😳 The other two had also been giving big flame outs on over run before I changed them. That's why I bought a re-packable, actually it was Chris Wheeler and Roger suggestion. 'Can you hear me running' .........
