Remote Oil Filter

I have a 1700 X-flow with an oil cooler. The feed for the oil cooler is taken off a sandwich plate that fits between the oil filter and the block. I have always found that I have a real problem getting the oil filter off, having to resort to violence, in an area with little easy access.

This time I have surpassed myself because the oil filter turns easily, but only because it is the sandwich plate that is turning away from the engine block - rather than the oil filter turning!!!Now I have to take off the engine mount, so that I can remove the whole fitting ahhhh.

My question is - how difficult is it to move the filter to a place in the engine where it is easier to change. Can I buy a blanking plate to fit where the oil filter currently sits (from somewhere like Burton Power), but with four feeds out - two for the oil cooler and two for the oil filter. And if so where is the best place to put the filter?

I think you'd probably need to stack two adaptors - your existing sandwich plate and a remote filter take off. If you really want to do it, try looking at www.thinkauto.com for parts.

However I use a tool that looks like this http://www.cromwell.co.uk/SYK5031605D (which you can buy cheaper from Halfords) and removing the filter is quite easy.

It sounds like you have the wrong thread for the filter you are using, what filters do you use?

While it is off can you check what thread it is ?

If not then take it to a motor factors to see if it is the same as you use, the metric version is very close to the old UNF thread and it is possible that you have been forcing the wrong one on, they should not be a problem to remove.

Think Auto can supply you with the correct one for the filters you use. *thumbup* *thumbup*

The "problem" with screw on filteres is the "O" rings expand when fitted and make them very tight. Even if you screw them up lightly try and get it off the next day. You need the oil filter tool and a lot of leverage. You're not to ask how I know, just believe me.

gents, many thanks for the replies. Job now done - although I chickened out of moving the oil filter this time because of a lack of time before I need the car!

Spoke to a nice gentleman at Think Automotive who gave me all the gen, so when the next filter seizes on I'll make sure I have enough time in the calendar to move it!!!
