neil.cavanagh
The temp gauge on my 1998 540i has started behaving slightly strangely. From a cold start it behaves normally for about the first 5 minutes, but after that the gauge goes full scale deflection into the red zone. Now, the car doesn't beep at me that is overheating, which makes me think it is the gauge rather than the sender. Then after another 3-5 mins of driving the gauge suddenly returns to reading correctly (by this time the engine is warmed up to normal running temp.) The needle moves less in a rapid, but damped motiong. ie takes 2-3 sec to go from full right deflection to middle of the range. To me there could be 3 things wrong: 1) dodgey temp sender 2) dodgey temp gauge 3) sticking thermostat. any thoughts? The third one could be doing some harm to the engine.... Manxseven
Maybe, When it goes to 'full scale' stop, get out and check a few water hoses to see if the t/sat is sticking. L7 BDA Supersprint now For Sale here
neil.cavanagh
Manxseven, Good idea.. however, finding anything that looks like a water hose under the bonnet is pretty darn tricky! Let alone knowing if it SHOULD be hot or cold at that point in time!!
Manxseven
Neil ,that's true enough. Maybe you can check the radiator instead?? L7 BDA Supersprint now For Sale here Edited by - Manxseven on 20 Dec 2005 12:02:
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted December 20, 2005 Leadership Team Share Posted December 20, 2005 It does sound though that something in the wiring may be shorting, causing the full swing? Stu.
