Drifter
Trying to start my 1.6VX and it makes a noise best described as a machine gun when I try to fire it. The needles flicker about a bit but engine does not catch. Think it is coming from the offside of the engine bay but can't be certain. Drove the car to town (needles were flickering a bit on the way down but thought nothing of it). Parked up and got back in 15 mins later to a non-starting car. Eventually fired up but parked it back in and tried again to no avail...Any ideas?

caterhamnut
...or the starter motor not engaging with the flywheel properly - perhaps a slightly past it (and cold) battery not quite having enough uumpph to throw the cog completely - result, it batters against the flywheel. www.mycaterham.com here 88,500 miles -1st 1.6k Supersport, '95 Motor Show car
Bricol
Sounds like the starter solenoid bouncing in and out on it's own due to flat battery -which assuming it started prior to the run might also mean duff alternator. Try a set of jump leads to another car battery. Bri
