Old Septimus Posted August 6, 2004 Share Posted August 6, 2004 My daughter has a P reg 1.4 petrol 106. During a long trip across France the "overheating" warning light on the face of the temperature gauge came on and stays on whenever the ignition is on. The gauge shows the temperature to be normal during driving, the rad is full and the cooling fan cuts in and out correctly. The light just comes on when you turn on the ignition and stays on. I tried fiddling with a sensor screwed into the back of the water pump but it did no good. I am fairly relaxed that there is no problem as the car runs fine and does not overheat. Sheds Moderator Posted August 6, 2004 Share Posted August 6, 2004 Surprised nobody has replied. I would check the wiring diagram and work out how it works. It sounds as if there are 2 senders, one for the gauge and one for the idiot light. It's the latter which is dud/wire fallen off/wire gone to earth. I would suggest that it's a switch of the "switch to earth above 110°C" type (recognisable by only having one connector) and you will have a supply from the fusebox to the light to the switch. In the case of a cold engine, switch contacts are open, light out. Hot engine, swich closes, lamp lights. Obviously if the switch has gone short circuit or the wire has found an earth (engine) then you will get these symptoms. Dunno where the sensor is but there can't be too many screwed into the water system on a 106. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I now have the wiring diagrams but am astonished by the amount of circuitry that goes into a modern car - even a small one. A far cry from my Morris Minor days.
