Tony C Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Took my oil catch tank tank off last night and along with a thin layer of oil in the bottom there seemed to be some petrol too. The contents moved too easily for pure oil and it smelled slightly of petrol. I didn'y have time to drain it off and inspect more closely - but can't figure out how petrol could get in the catch tank. I have noticed that since fitting the catch tank I get less backfiring in the exhaust on overrun Any ideas????? F355GTS Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Tony I suspect it isn't petrol but water formed from condensation coming from the breather, it's not uncommon for Oil to smell a bit of petrol particularly if you are running a bit richer, you mention less backfiring, backfiring can be caused by a lean engine so maybe the erngine is running richer now Maybe it's a coincidence but might be worth getting your Lambda values checked to ensure something like a coolant sensor hasn't failed creating a richer mixture Mark

Bob Corb Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Agree with Mark, it sounds like maybe you're running a little rich. This may lead to some bore washing and hence oil/petrol/condensation running into the sump. I've found that in the stagnant environment of the catch tank the water vapour just condenses out into a layer rather than forming an emulsion. The petrol should be dissolved in the oil so you wont see any seperate phases. This sort of carryover sounds quite normal. Not sure how much scope there is for leaning out the fuelling without doing serious amounts of rolling road work... (I guess Emerald dont have time to optimise fuelling accross the enitre speed load range and just leav things slightly rich to maintain driveability). I could bring my Lambda meter to Towcester meet sometime? Bob

I guess too that what's going into the catch tank starts as a mist and there must be bits of everything.
