captain chaos
The scavenge pump is spaced with 2 washers between the pump and the block (one on each bolt). This creates the required tension for the scavenge pump belt. Does anyone know the thickness of the spacers? Are they both the same? How much play should I have in the belt. ie new belt on, what should be the mm movement from level (middle) to pushed up or down be? Could someone just pop into the garage and have a measure for me? There is nothing in the build manual nor in the archives. thanks
h.p.c. peter
i have previously used the double washer method and had lots of trouble with belt snaping etc,i think it's worth getting the correct spacers from cc considering the cost of the damage that may result from a thrown belt [the cc ones are machined flat spacers]
captain chaos
I think I have got the right spacers, but for some reason the belt seems to be slacker than usual. I'm worried that over the recent months (engines been in and out 3 times ☹️) that possibly they've got mixed up with some other washers or that they were not right in the first place and I've just not noticed it before. Foxy Smith
I was a bit worried a while back about how slack my belt looked. To be honest it ran like that for a while without problems but I was eventually inspired to machine a couple of additional spacers. I think I added an additional 1.0mm but can't swear to it. My hunch is however that it is more critical to keep the pulleys absolutely co-planar than worry too much about the slack. At the moment I would estimate I have about 5mm free movement of the belt in the middle of the top run. Its a newish belt, I change them roughly once a year. stevefoster
Mine needed no spacers and has been a nice tolerance fit ever since. Change the belt once a year and all should be well. F355GTS
I just went out ot measure mine as the Engine's out and there arn't any, tension seems OK Mark
captain chaos
Steve & F355, No spacers?...the pump has a couple of recesses where what look like two large washers sit which spaces the pump from the block. There are also another couple of spacers on the engine mount side. What tension have you got on the belt...how much slack can you measure from level? Cheers. PS The spacers are only about 3mm thick, but in my playing around this afternoon fractions can make quite a difference to belt tension. F355GTS
CC don't know if it helps but took some pics here Pic 1 shows inside face of sump, the two 'spacers' are fluch with the pump face Pic 2 show s the outside face, the 'spacers' are about 1mm proud of the face Pics 5 & 6 show belt deflection (brand new belt) with pump fitted and no spacers On a gut feel basis I would say the belt doesn't want to be any tighter than it is Mark

stevefoster
I check the belt regularly. The tension does not seem to vary during it life. I just feels 'right'. About 5mm or so up and down possible.
