New Battery for the Blipper!

Andy65

Recommended Posts

Just got a new battery for the blipper for the immobilser from my friendly local Rover dealer and he said that once I've removed the old battery I should press both button to fully discharge the handset before I put the new ones in!

Not that I'm an untrusting soul but just like to confirm that this is safe and I won't lose the code. Has anyone heard of this?????

Thanks Andrew 1.8k supersport registered 2001

Land Rover use the same Lucas plip for Freelander, and there is no instruction to do this in the handbook / service information.

Just swap it over, and make sure you put it in the right way up 😬

The unique key code is programmed into the ASIC by the manufacturer. Removing the battery can't corrupt it. As Guy says, just swap the battery over.

Might have to press the buttons a few times to get it to re-sync though.

I have bucket-loads of spare batteries (and key-fobs) if anyone in the Worcs area needs one.

Thanks Mike, I did what Guy said and then *eek* nothing happened........ and as you say it took a couple of tries to re-sync.....phew *thumbup*

Actually, I'd very much like a spare blipper, I'm just south of Cirencester, if you can spare one. Shall I contact you on your contact above?

If / When you get a new pllp, you need to to teach the MEMS it's code. This can only be done by a Rover Dealer using TestBook / T4 or the T4 Hand Held Tester. It's a two minute job.

Forgot to say press the buttons to re-sync - sorry to give you a fright!

Excellent Guy thanks, I was just considering this stage, good news, thanks for the advice. Sooo much better when you turn up to these chaps when one got the correct lingo; means they take one seriously.

Don't worry about the 're-syncing' it readjusted very quickly it was just that momentary worry we've all had from time to time.

Cheers Andrew

As Guy says, your Rover dealer can supply a spare fob and match it to the immobiliser, (but you do need to learn ALL your key fobs to the immobiliser unit in one go). Price is a bit steep. It may be a 2 min job but I bet they charge more than 2 mins labour (and keep you waiting an hour and a half so you feel you have had your money's worth... 😬)

Probably the most convenient option though.

I am happy to sort people out in the Brook carpark if they need bits/laptop action, but I don't want to get into a commercial venture!

ok Mike thanks for the advice........I'd buy one off you etc.. but I don't want to put you in a difficult position and create a precedent that you might find difficult to get out of

From the website link above:

"Price from :- 2 button fob (programmed) - £62.00 inc. post & packing"

Crikey, I was going to offer to do it for a tenner! Better re-calibrate my pricing strategy... 😬

Course, my method does involve a bit of "engine-start roulette". If you happen to be the nth customer, and my laptop battery blows out mid programming you could well be walking home! *cool*

A tenner *eek*

I'll do it for £9.50 😬

I wonder if the 5AS has an EKA code in it? If so, could solve the 'battery flat in the middle of nowhere' scenario by adding a couple of switches in...

Guy - Indeed the 5AS does have an EKA code (which I can read out). However, even if you can remember the number I have always found code entry to be a PITA. Not recommended!

I'd be happy to knock out a few keys and matching to club members who turn up to the Worcs meet for a tenner a go. Can't be arsed with mail order faff though. Various people have helped me out in the past (take a bow Nige) so I'll pass on the goodwill...

Also 5AS "tuning":

For RACE ONLY I can make life more convenient... *cool*

If anybody with a correctly wired FIA switch wants single (rather than 4 or 5) press re-sync after cycling the battery that can be done. It seems some units are programmed like this as standard, some not.

Finally I can set the time between Ignition off and passive arming of the immobiliser. Default is 10 minutes, I'd recommend about 30s.

Dave - NO!

I don't have access to the engine management diagnostic kit.

But I know a man who does, should you need a MEMS ecu matched to an immobiliser.

If you are asking because you want to get jiggy with engine maps an' stuff then sorry, can't help.
