Sticky disk piston

q998

Recommended Posts

Hi

My car's front left brake piston thing seems to be sticking - on or off ... If off it can be changed to on with the brake pedal but then it binds on for some time.

Is this something I can fix by stripping and coating with Copraslip or somesuch or is the whole caliper likely to be done for?

It's a 1990 1700 SS with a Marina rear end.

Thanks

Si

Of course it's not sensible....

The cure may be simple but not for the inexperienced. Remove road wheel. Remove 1 brake pad. If you don't know how to do this then refit road wheels and take to a garage. Remove brake master cylinder filler cap and put some cloth around top as fluid may leak out. Get two large screwdrivers and using the edge of the calliper as a lever point get someone to push pedal down very slowly so piston moves towards disc. Then using equal force move piston back away from disc till it's fully retracted. Do this several times untill it's moving in & out freely. refit pad and do same with other side. IF IN DOUBT DO NOT ATTEMPT but take to a garage for attention. When finished top up master cylinder with correct fluid and refit cap.

Do exactly as Norman says but whilst the piston is in the fully out position lift the 'boot' around the piston neck and put a few drops of brake fluid inside - this will help lubricate the hydraulic seal further in and should stop any re-occurence of this problem.
