Plug top coils + VVC head - can it be done

Dave McCulloch

Recommended Posts

I've acquired an EU3 1800 K series engine from an MGF, which I'm using as the basis of an upgraded engine to replace my 1600 supersport. I also have a VVC head which will be fitted.

As the EU3 engine came complete with the plug top coil packs, I'd like to use these if at all possible. A quick look last night revealed that the EU3 cam cover will fit to the VVC head, but the cam bearing ladder is thicker on the VVC than on the std EU3 head - so the spark plug tubes will not be long enough.

Has anyone successfully fitted plug top coils to a VVC head, and how did you do it? Or is it all going to be too much hassle - in which case what is the recommended (ie cheapest!) route.

Thanks

Dave

You can get at least two type of plug-tops; one with grey (short) boots and the other with red (longer) boots. I got them for the same reason as you, but havent got round to using them yet.

You welcome to borow them, but I do want them back/replaced at some point.

Thanks Adam

Presume these were standard Rover parts? Any idea whether the longer boots are available separately to the coils?

One of the boots came off the coil pack when I removed it - it was just a push fit on the coil, and the electrical connection to the plug appears to be just through a spring which clips over the coil output pin, running inside the boot.

Hi think theyre standard Rover parts. Not sure if the "boots" are available separately.

Maybe you could extend the spring part somehow, or extend the spark plug tops? Ive never tried this and would be careful not to introduce some weak link in the HT path.

Each "boot" is 83mm. The distance from the coils core base (is that clear?) to the boot tip is 141mm.

Send me an email if you want me to reply with a "thousands words" photo.
