Northern Banana
Sorry if this is a stupid question....but When replacing tyres on the original SLR split rims, do the rims always need dismantling to allow tyres to be fitted? Been to a couple of garages this morning to get this done and they both looked puzzled, ended up saying we will have to dismantle and them admitting they didn't have the tool to remove the rims!!! Still after an R500 silencer Northern Banana.com
k80rum
Doesn't sound like a stupid question to me Paul.. For what it's worth, my split rims have *never* needed dismantling. However, they are less than pristine because the rim material is very soft and ACB10s in particular seem to have less 'give' in them than other tyres for fitting/removal - even Avon Sport had fun with one wheel at their motorsport division when I visited them once. dba11
Are these the 5 spoke rims? If so i have never had any problems, never heard of this before either. I know there were early and late rims, but just thought the later ones had rolled edges, perhaps they are slightly different. But i wouln't have thought any would need dismantling, not just to change the tyres. Puzzled Daren.
Mike C
You cannot dismantle the rims, they are welded. The only bit that can be removed would be the rim from the 5 spoke centre. There is no need to take anything apart when fitting tyres. Regards Mike K9 JPE
martinwhitcher
The MB split rims ARE NOT WELDED, can't comment on the 5 spoke non-rolled split's! Martin MW 51 CAT Superlight No.
jimmyslr
I have 2 sets of these and they do not need dismantling to have tyres fitted. They can get a bit scratched by fitter, but nothing too bad. I am tracking the car not presenting it on the concourse!
Mike C
I know the MB rims are not welded but these are a completely different wheel!! And they ARE welded! Mike c
