DJW
I’ve decided to upgrade my 1600vx and have obtained a 2.0L 8v SRI engine to transplant. The exhaust configuration is the same however the inlet ports carb side are different. I have got hold of a replacement manifold from tweeks, however, it does not rise as high as the original Caterham part. As a result, when fitted, I do not have sufficient clearance for my existing bonnet to fit back on. (the bottom of the webber cover fouls the ribbed bottom edge of the bonnet by approx. 10mm) As far as I can see I have a few possible option: 1. Try and find a replacement compatible manifold. Does one exist? 2. Fit smaller DCOE/ webber carb covers and enclose under a new bonnet. If I did this would I get sufficient airflow into the carbs? 3. Buy a new bonnet and make a new cut out- will the cut edge be robust enough? Would it look like a home made bodge? Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated Thanks DJW
Stuart Faulds
I would be tempted to have the face of the manifold machined at an angle to tilt the carbs slightly. 10mm over that distance is a very slight angle, and shouldn't cause a problem. DJW
I agree it probably would fit, but it would still leave an unsightly gap at the top between carb and bonnet.
dino ferrana
Are you still going to have the Marina Axle in the car? I would suggest that this engine will exceed the torque capacity of that axle.
DJW
keeping the axle, costs reasons only. anticipated 130 to 140 bhp so should be ok.
James B.
If you are looking for 130 to 140 bhp I have had my 1.6 VX modified (cost under 1k) and had it rolling roaded at 137 bhp and 135 lbs/ft of torque and still have a standard looking engine. No probs with carbs or exhaust or anything else for that matter. If you want details I will forward them to you. James.
