John Vine
I've promised my son a shared-driving trackday, and I'm looking for a cheap but effective intercom to be used with a full-face helmet. I've done a search, and one possible source seems to be Maplin. What would you guys recommend? JV
Big Brother
John, The Maplin one is cr4p! The ear pieces are the in the ear type and either fall out or get pushed in too much for comfort (by the helmet padding) Either way the main problem is that you won't be able to hear anything OMP however do a very nice intercom for around £35. It uses a 9v battery so can be popped in your pocket and comes with everything needed to fit to two full face helmets. I have tried one out in Andy McSwans SLR and it worked very well, even at around 120mph he said he could still hear me screaming 😬 Demon Tweeks sell them here Steve Se7en-Up! YellowSeven
I'd second the OMP item
Tiff
I fitted the very cheap OMP intercom mentioned from DT. Its now done 4 trackdays AND, not advertised in the blurb, it has a jack input for a CD/tape player. Its a bit tinny I have to admit but its done the job well on the track. I attached the unit with velcro between the seats on the rear bulkhead. Everyone said it was cr@p but its still going. Good enough for me....... Nick Woods
On a related theme, does anyone know of a reasonably good but inexpensive pair of practice headsets to go with the inexpensive intercom ? John Vine
Thanks, chaps. I've just ordered the OMP from DT (cat no OMPJA816). The price is now £40 incl VAT, which with postage (and yet more VAT) comes to £48. I'll charge it to my son's account! JV
John Vine
Well, it's just arrived! That's good service. (Sans battery, though, just like those Christmas toys!) A couple of questions... (1) I see each unit has two earpieces. Is it necessary to use both, or is one sufficient? (2) The earpieces are attached via Velcro to a sticky pad applied to the helment lining. Mine will be permanent, but my son is borrowing a helmet for the day. Once stuck, do these pads come off again? JV
Tiff
You can apply the velcro direct to the lining - not using the sticky pad. (The chinguard on my helmet isn't lined - so I had to use the sticky pad on the mouthpiece.)
GTD
Do these pads come off??? Oh yes they do - I ended up buying some heavier duty velcro tape to get them to fit 'permanently' in my race helmet. The passenger set work fine puched into place in whatever helmet is being used. I'd suggest go for both earpieces myself....
