Adrian Bruce
Had to reverse 150m today (Missed exit) at speeds up to 15-20 mph. When I started going forwards again, the speedo failed to work. Honest, officer Does anyone have any idea where the speedo cable might have parted?
shn7
Blimey Adrian, hope that wasn't a motorway/dual carriageway exit First check should be under the car to see if the speedo drive has come away from the back of the gearbox. Steve.
Nigel Riches
The cable which drives the speedo has a "wound" outer wire, which enables it to turn freely in the sheath, predominantly in an upscale direction, if your cable was marginal with the lubricating oil there is a good chance the "wound" inner part has become un "wound" and jammed inside the sheath. New cable time. If the speedo is a common or garden wavey pointer type, then the pointer is moved across the scale by a magnet revolving in a drag cup, the faster the cable spins the magnet the more the pointer moves across the scale, simple, so the magnet would have been revolving in the opposite direction when reversing, driving the pointer against the stop, check the pointer isn't jammed on the stop pin, not very likely, unfortunately, sounds more like the cables expired. Adrian Bruce
Chaps, thanks for the ideas. Will inspect this tonight. Steve - FYI it was a very confusing junction (Services or Exit?) on a dual carriageway just north of Cirencester. There was no traffic about otherwise I would have had to go on to the next available roundabout/central reservation gap. Honest........!
shn7
Adrian, glad to hear there was no traffic about. The reason I was alarmed is that I once encountered a chap reversing back up a M25 on-slip as I joined it from a roundabout. Gave both of us a fright . He would have been much safer given he had no idea whether anything would come off the roundabout, to go up to the next junction and return even if it would have cost him 20 mins. Hope you get the speedo sorted soon Steve.
