micksmetafors
looks like I'll have to replace the drivers side item. Anybody know if they can be rebuilt or is it a new item from CC? Or does anyone have a good used one in their collections? Steve
Powderpuff
Have just split and re-built the shafts of the 21 to replace the rubber boots...what part of them is worn? Enquired of Caterham for the cost of replacement shafts...it was painful The name's Puff, Powder Puff N7XTC
micksmetafors
I'm sure the CC price is painful, they're specialists after all! Seems to be a lot of play in the inner joint. First noticed as a clonk on changing gear. Thought it was diff back lash but it's not. The movement up and down on the shaft is about 1/16" . Not sure if anybody offers service exchange on these things. I'll have a ring round tomorrow if noone else has any ideas.
Rob Walker
You will struggle to find a replacement cv joint. Ford no longer sell them as a separate item and I had no luck with any motorfactors or transmission specialists. Yor best bet is to get a good secondhand joint offa sierra the rubber boot kits are still avalable via ford or send the whole shaft back to GKN driveline the manufacture. A new shaft is around £220 from CC.
micksmetafors
Thanks for the info Rob. I think I'll part with the cash to CC and then start up a business reconditioning the shafts. In 10 years of ownership ( 4 cars) this is the first shaft I've known to go like this. Not sure how bad it really is but the clonking is annoying. Better go and get grubby under the thing. Good job it's raining now. Thaks again, Steve
micksmetafors
Ordered a new shaft from CC this morning. £175 + vat. They say it is a new design based on Freelander joints rather than Sierra. Apparently this is stronger and more reliable. Hope so, but think the original failed due to grease loss. the boot has zipties rather than the ususal metal straps. Sheds Moderator
This sort of thing can usually be reconditioned on an exchange basis by your local motor factor. Also a good source of working brake calipers etc etc.
Rob Walker
The new drive shafts are 1.5kg lighter than the original sierra based unit. I have my doubts that they could be stronger the sierra joints and bespoke shafts were massive and no one stocked replacement joints as they never failed even on taxi`s and covering huge miles.
