Wahey
After all the advice given to me on oil recomendations I am in no doubt that I will be put straight with my next question: I need help on deciding what exhaust system to get for my Cat. As before, standard 1.6k ss superlight with standard exhaust which is a bit long in the tooth. I would like to upgrade ideally for something that will give me a bit more torque but will also pass most track days for noise regs. Although I am looking at buying an additional muffler just in case and most of the days I do are noisy ones anyway. Next year though I will be doing more quiet ones. I have heard about the 7 inch one from Caterham that is quieter, but does this give any more horses / torque? Also, is there any advantage in having my car butchered to have a 4-2-1 system fitted? Or can I get similar gains from the single pipe that exits the car? I am not too concerned about it having a cat either as I can pop my current exhaust on come MOT time. I will be upgrading the engine to R300 spec at some point in the next 12 months too so I need it to be compatible. Cheers folks Rich
Beelzebub
I've recently replaced the std 4 into 1 with catalyst system on my 1.8 Roadsport with an EBD here 4 into 2 into one manifold. This mates up to a 2.5 bore 7" OD Raceco silencer. The seat of the pants dyno would indicate IMHO that the bottom & mid-range torque is noticeably improved. The car has'nt been on a rolling road so I cannot give you any definitive figures. The difference though was very apparent & the car feels a lot more flexible & I found myself wondering how an exhaust system could make such a difference. Going down this route will cost around a grand. If you find yourself baulking at the amount bear a couple of things in mind. Graham at EBD (I've got no vested interests in EBD or Raceco) makes stainless exhausts of terrific fit & finish. They're highly functional & great value considering the work that goes into them. The titanium Raceco silencer is also a fantastic bit of gear & is also very light. When I took delivery of mine it felt like the huge box it came in was empty. I scrutinised the titanium sleeve, the spun stainless ends & the impossibly neat TIG welding for ages marvelling at the skill of whichever artisan put it together. You can spend about half the amount of money & get a functioning stainless 4-2-1 exhaust. I've been down this route & was extremely dissatisfied. There is a market for this type of exhaust & there are plenty of them out there with happy owners. I was'nt one of them......... Nuff said. Depending on where you go & who you speak to you can also spend a LOT more money. What you will getting into is thinner walled tubing possibly Inconel any diameter you want it made in. It will be a F1 type work of art. I could'nt afford/did'nt need one. Lastly if you're in any doubt about the required dimensions have a look at the DVA Power site here

Wahey
Thanks for the reply. Don't reckon I fancy throwing a grand at one just yet though. Anyone any ideas on the types I have mentioned? Particularly 7" one compared to standard? Does this still have a cat and does it improve torque? Cheers

John Vine
Last October, I had a Caterham 4-1 exhaust plus R500 7" "quiet" silencer fitted as part of my Supersport-R upgrade. This combination may not be the cheapest (it cost around £1K) but I've no regrets at all. The only snag is that is doesn't come with a cat (but Millwood sorted it all out for me at MOT time). Dobuy
Don't know if AMMO is lurking here at all, anyone know if the RaceCo silencer will fit on the Raceline/Cheesemans manifold for the Duratec? Duratec Se7en, built in Dubai, pics here! Keep it sunny side up and out of the kitty litter.
