Dartmoor7
My 1994 1.4 SS has the non-adjustable Bilsteins. However I can see some grooves cut into the damper bodies below where the spring seat now sits. Is it possible to move the spring seat down? Chelspeed
Yes. If you take the spring off and pull the spring seat up there will be a wire circlip fitted to a similar groove. If you move the criclip up or down one groove it'll change the ride height. Not ideal as you can only move a groove at a time. In the days before the adjustable seat mods you used to be able to get shims to fit under the springs to fine tune the bit between grooves. They were just simple ally discs of various thicknesses that fitted between the spring and the seat so simple enough to make you own.
Dartmoor7
Thanks Chelspeed, It's funny that I haven't seen this mentioned in all the time I've been reading Blatchat! Looks like about a 1cm difference between grooves. I think my spring compressors are too big to fit between the coils though; is there a slim-forked compressor available do you know? DrivRich
WOW *thumbup* *thumbup* *thumbup* *thumbup* The freebie flatfloor weigh-in at Millwood revealed my front right is 5 Kg heavier than front left. So on my non-adjustable bilsteins I need to put a shim (we used to use the word shim to describe masculine women 😳) in on my front left bilstein to raise the ride height - by enough to counter 5 Kg *idea* So anyone with experience of adjustable springs like to estimate how thick the shim needs to be 🤔 🤔 Thank you *thumbup* Dave Dodge Viper Blue with Metalic Silver nose band and stripe Membership Number 66 😬 😬 Edited by - DrivRich on 20 Jun 2004 19:36:
Pelico
Steve Foster told me that getting close to 5kg is a good target, so you may be close enough not to worry. What were the rear weights ? When you flat floor you are balancing across the diagonals so I think you need to take all four corners into account. Graham Perry
With a 5kg difference at the front I don't think I would worry too much.
DrivRich
Thank you for the feedback. Reference the rear weights - Rear Right was 11 kg heavier than Rear Left with me in it. Still need to loose weight Cheers, Dave Dodge Viper Blue with Metalic Silver nose band and stripe Membership Number 66 😬 😬
Slomove
Re spring compressors: 2 extra large hose clamps (or is that jubilee clips here?) to compress the springs. I re-used them for both front springs and still O.K. Gert Edited by - Slomove on 24 Jun 2004 04:17:
Dartmoor7
Thanks Gert, never would have thought of using them. Jerry Parker L7 SVN 1.4 Supersport
