1.4 kss - does it need a 'stat?

I have done a search but can't find the relevant thread. I have an ex race 1.4kss, Minister build. Ally race rad, no heater. ISTR that Minister didn't fit thermostats to this engine to assist cooling. My car is now used on the road and in all but the heaviest traffic and French summer heat it runs too cool, typically 60C when moving. If it gets hotter than 80 or 90, in traffic, I put the manual fan on. I don't think this is too desirable, I would prefer the thing to run at about 80 to 90 as this is the design temp. I have heard conflicting views, should a thermostat be fitted to this engine for road use? I was thinking of the 1102, 76° stat as a good choice.

 

Secondly, the race rad has a bleed screw but no elec fan switch. Can one be retrofitted into the bleed screw hole or anywhere else?

My old 1400 engine was the C-class racer variety and was fitted with a thermostat - 82 deg I think?

 

IIRC there are sleeves availbable that will fit in a hose and take a temperature sensor or switch. Maybe check with somebody such as Demon Tweeks with a view to fitting one in the top hose?

I would definitely fit a thermostat. The reasoning for racers omiting a thermostat is that A) It's one less thing to go wrong B) They don't care about engine life. I don't think either arguement counts for much on a road car.

Stu, of course I'm just after an easy life! The list of things I'd like to do to the car gets longer rather than shorter and unfortunately there aren't enough hours in the week when I've finished going to work, sitting in bars and chatting up French girls (it's a tough job but someone has to do it). Thanks BTW for the info on the inline top hose switch, sounds useful (no. 36 on list of 40 ish jobs)

Unusually concise for you Peter *wink*. ISTR you were the author of one of the detailed "pro-stat" comments from the thread that I can no longer find. It does seem logical though - after all there is little point in all of us getting our collective heads up our ar5es concerning 5 SAE viscosity points or Mobil vs Comma vs Caterham approved versions of the same if the engine is running 30 degrees cooler than its design temp. So, best get one dropped in. *smile* Thanks all for the sensible advice, reassuringly confirming what I thought already.
