Headlight adjustment faff...

IMHO the standard headlight design is a complete load of doggie doo. *thumbdown*

The flimsy metal tang is just not man enough to stop the mounting bolt from rotating when you tighten the nut up.

This makes it a royal PITA to make beam angle adjustments. *mad*

I was disappointed to find my dinky nice new SVC lights use the same (crap) system.

Has anyone devised a decent engineering solution to this?

I am on the verge of chucking them away and finding something with an external mount. Maybe some of those "tractor" lights as recommended by Chelspeed and the Gloucester country boys... 😬

Hi, I'm Steve Taylor from sVc - the design you don't like has been used by us for nearly 20 years and is an improved copy of the originag Lucas design.

We make about 4,000 headlights a year and get complaints about this every 18 months or so. The tag was made more rigid when we re-tolled the lights last year.

Please ensure the thread is clean and lubricated - and then tighten the bottom bolt up so that the headlight is steady - don't overtighten.

If you want some new inner tags, please let me know - ours are made from steel and are fitted to the light with 2 copper rivets.

You can call me on 08 456 581 251 & I'll be pleased to send some to you with our compliments.

If you need new bottom bolts and nuts - please let me know.

We are at the Newark show this weekend so call me on Monday please.

Best regards

Steve @ sVc

Steve - my comments were not meant to be a criticism of the quality of the SVC lamps. Au contraire, they are much better finished than the OE Caterham chrome versions (which went rusty after 3 months). What I don't like is the engineering design that you have "inherited". The whole concept of allowing multi-angle adjustment just doesn't work satisfactorily IMHO.

My solution is to drill out the rivets holding the steel tang and replace with a carefully shaped ally block. That should stop the bolt twisting!

I note you have contibuted to another thread about fitting small m/cycle headlights. I was considering a set of these given the bottom mount adjustability, but the quality is pretty "down to a price" - not on a par with yours. I'd certainly be interested if you come up with something similar.

Cheers,

Mike.
