andy oliver
I need a new starter motor for a Zetec. I notice the Brise "Competition" one in DT is roughly the same price as a Ford one. If anyone has any experience of these I would be interested to know if I would be better buying one than the standard Ford job.

I.Mupferit
Be careful, though, if you have a Raceline sump......... 'cos it won't fit. I tried 2 different types of geared starter motors from Brise last year and neither of them were anywhere near fitting. However, Brise eventually modified my existing X/Flow starter by getting it rewound to 9V rating. This has the effect of providing additional torque from the 12V battery during the relatively short cranking period which is good enough to turn the motor even when very hot. The old 12V windings really struggled under such conditions until things had cooled a bit. Not very suitable for prolonged cranking though, for obvious reasons. andy oliver
Many thanks Guys. Mine is a standard Zetec and I'm wondering what the advantage of a Brise motor would be over the Ford item.
I.Mupferit
It is a geared motor which gives a higher cranking torque and is lighter than the standard X/Flow item. If, however, your Zetec is standard and the existing X/flow type motor cranks it over ok then I wouldn't bother changing it. I only had problems once the engine had been upgraded and the starter wouldn't crank over when it was very hot. Once cooled a bit, though, all was well.
