Mr Locust
Can't say for absolutely sure but I seem to recall M8 with a flanged head and 10mm a/f hexagon. Ian Green and Silver Roadsport 😬

Sheds Moderator
Hi Angus! I too have heard M7. M7 does not exist in fastener catalogues, so it's a weirdo. Neither does M8 with 10mm head. M6/10 and M8/13 are the favoured sizes. If it is an M7 I am intrigued because it does nothing that an M8 won't (and not much an M6 won't, it's only a bloody clutch, hardly a massive loading) if you engineer the rest of it correctly. Tony Whitley
Angus, I think I have a spare set you can have. Whether I can find them is a different matter... M1 7 SMW 1.4-now-1.8K Mem.No. 10376

caterhamnut
Well, the bolts Caterham sent were indeed M7 - despite saying that they weren't. Of course the ones we actually needed we found out to be M8 (and indeed a different thread from the ones that were sent) So, its a Caterham supplied lightend flywheel, and a Caterham supplied AP clutch plate - why don't they know which bolts to send? And whilst I'm on the subject - ordered a few bits and pieces 2 days ago (sump sponge, oil filter etc) - rang back 10 minutes later with corrected bolt requirements, 'no, can't pop them in the same bag - new order, and you've missed the cut-off' - both packs arrive at the same time 2 days ago - cost of bolts - £1.80 - cot of postage for the bolts - £1.50 All sorted thanks to Mark's huge bolt supplied bin. ECR
For my Vauxhall XE Clutch cover to flywheel bolts : M7 x 1. Glad that Caterhams mistake has proved that an M7 actualy exists ! I measured mine half a dozen times and because it is a non standard fastening I refused to believe the evidence of my own eyes !
caterhamnut
That is what confused us Roger - the fact that you never see them anywhere else!! 'My First Race - SPA' pictures here 60,000miles in 3years
Sheds Moderator
Why bother using a special size bolt when M8 exists? I just don't see the logic. Just like ECR I would be wandering round in a daze if I ever put a micrometer across such a fastening. Also, the use of a special thread is odd. Metrics default to "Metric coarse" which is a bit coarser than UNF but in M8, M6 etc a nice, effective, robust thread size which is easy to fit and holds well in steel or ally. So why change a winning formula?
Chris__
Another post dragged from the archives. Does anyone know the Rover part no for these clutch housing bolts? Thanks! Chris.
F355GTS
Chris i tried with a v. helpful Rover parts dept but they couldn't trace it on any car, in the end I got them form Caterham Mark
Myles
Chris - It's not a Rover-part as such. Don't forget that the clutch is not a Rover item - it's smaller and the R500 one is completely bespoke. You're best off ordering them from Caterham - I had to. Just tell them precisely which flyhwheel and clutch cover you've got. Get it right, chaps... V7 SLR
Angus, when I changed flywheels, I noted that my old SLR flywheel (the middle weight one) had M7 and the new one (R500 flywheel) has M8. So in theory both answers are correct.
Chris__
My SLR has a different flywheel to others (lighter than other SLR's according to someone who's had a look see) apparently because it's an early development car. We'll see whether they fit or not! Chris.
Chris__
Update. The one's on my flywheel are definitely M7. Now attempting to ring Caterham parts who are of course engaged. 😬 Chris.
