robert green
Drove for about 10 miles with the handbrake on yesterday - dohh! Things got very hot. Will I have damaged anything - apart from wearing out the brake pads a bit! Worried about bearings etc. Hand brake under the dash - out of sight, out of mind! westy
No should be fine. For me it's getting on the Gas, when everything you know say's get on the brake!!!
Myles
Probably worth bleeding some fluid through the rear calipers though... You shouldn't need to draw through too much - just enough to get rid of any that boiled... Keep BC free and open for ALL. Smegnoguk
Did this a few times when I first built my Classic. That was five years ago and no harm seems to have been done and I seem to have learned not to do it again (touch wood). Member No. 10421
Westfield
Don’t worry; my mates’ wife is always doing it. She often turns up on the drive with smoke coming from both rear wheels! Never seems to do the car any harm apart from frequent pad changes!!! When he asked her what she though the light on the dash was for she replied “I look at the road, not the dash” She also drove a 100 mile down the motorway in 4th gear because she “forgot” it had 5 gears!! Myles
I look at the road, not the dash Must be in the top 5-percentile of safe women drivers then - at least she's not looking in the vanity mirror to do her makeup On a more serious note, my 7 was recently hit by a female reversing off her drive (2nd time in two years, her husband said...) - so I feel that I've earned a few vouchers for female-driver digs out of that one... I.Mupferit
My wife drove my 5 series for 15 miles up the motorway with the handbrake on and apart from wearing out the pads and long travel on the handbrake it was ok. I couldn't say too much to her anyway as she was good enough to be picking me and some mates up after a Guinness soaked afternoon watching rugby. pete east
Remember the article in the AAs magazine years ago on some of the mistakes made by women drivers e.g Michael Parkinsons wife who drove their brand new XJ6 doen the M1 from Manchester at 60mph and wondered why it seem so fast and all the other cars were going so slow? she was looking at the tacho thinking it was the speedometer! another woman called out the AA when her car overheated. She said she needed water for the radiator but she insisted that the patrolman only bring Fiat water because her car was a Fiat. And the old chessnut of a woman who literally pulled out the choke on her Morris Minor so that she could hang her handbag on it and then wondered why the car was not giving many mpg!. Frying Pan
I drove the very first Aston MArtin DB7 Volante (my next door neighbour worked at Bloxham and swapped it for an MGF for an evening 😬). These had a fly-off handbrake and I drove it for a couple of miles with the handbrake on. Wondered why it was not as quick as I hoped... Much better when I realised 😬 The handbrake on my car (trans tunnel mounted) is a Mini (?) part, and has the handbrake switch included - wouldn't be too difficult to rig up a warning lamp on this - perhaps the under-dash ones are the same? Guy See some pictures of the build here. First 2000 miles completed!
wag
Never know if these stories are true. American tourist hires a small car at Heathrow. Can drive shift no problem but does not know to change out of first. Thinks the lack of speed and the noise are why they have big cars in the States. Engine finally gives up after about 100 miles.
