Petrolhead
I want to replace the std fuel filler with an alloy on. Its for an injected car (1.6K) Should I just buy the one from Caterham or go somewhere else? I might add that I am looking for one that doesn't need a key to open Now with SL No 148 Edited by - petrolhead on 28 Jun 2004 12:37:
Anthony
Caterham one goes straight on, but make sure stainless fixings have correct depth on allen head, I had one with shallow head, which has been painful to get out Easy to fit Regards Anthony Raceco can on and it looks stunning
Myles
Ha! I was on the 'bleeding edge' of the wave of purchasers of the new 6-bolt Newton ali aero filler last year and I had major problems which basically resulted in a total inability to get any petrol into the car. Arguably, the problem was with the fuel-filler neck rather than the aero-assembly - but the aero-cap was marketed as requiring no modifications to the filler neck... Anyway, it appears that it's a bit of a lottery - some people have had not problems, and some (such as myself) have had to grind out the silly SVA restrictor cone and flap (designed to stop you putting the wrong fuel in the car, allegedly) as well as the retaining ring for the old Rover plastic cap. With these mods, I can actually get the fuel nozzle into the neck - without them, it was impossible. They look (and work) great once on the car, but be prepared for a bit of grief when fitting it - YMMV though - you might be lucky.... Keep BC free and open for ALL. Graham Sewell
James Whiting's reception had an advert suggesting that he would be cheaper than CC! Low tech luddite - xflow and proud!

Petrolhead
So is the James Whiting and Caterham alloy fuel caps the same? Now with SL No
Graham Sewell
I don't think that they are the same. James' one does not have "Caterham" etched into cap. Low tech luddite - xflow and proud!

Myles
My Newton doesn't have the 7 on it, but is otherwise identical (I understand) to the 'new' caterham one. I got mine from Think Auto - and they give a sizeable discount to club members (or did...), so if you want to got for one and don't mind not having the engraving, give Think a call... Bafty Crastard
Yes so people say The Caterham supplied fillers didn't have a problem with hoses not fitting in the neck, stand to be corrected ! Original R300 NUT

Myles
The Caterham supplied fillers didn't have a problem with hoses not fitting in the neck, stand to be corrected ! This was *NOT* the problem... Mine fitted just fine - but because the SVA cone/flap seems to be welded in to the neck by hand (i.e. it's position varies from batch to batch), some people were lucky and some (me for instance) weren't)... A couple of us measured how far down the neck the SVA cone seemed to be - and mine was further down than some others - so with the thicker aero-filler casting, the pump nozzle wasn't reaching far enough down to push open the flap. Petrolhead
I had to remove that sily flap on my last roadsport using the std cap! Now with SL No
inspector71
I got mine from Caterham at the end of last year, it has an engraved 7 on it and it looks the dogs b***cks. I've had no problems filling up at my local station, BUT, when i fill up at stations on the motorway, i get petrol splashing back out of the filler I think it is down to the speed of the pump on motorway stations being quicker than your average round town station. regards peter h
Petrolhead
Ok, now fitted and fairly straight forward. See here click on Aero Fuel Filler Now with SL No
Petrolhead
UPDATE: Although the fitting was straight forward the filling was not!! I have now had to gring the top of the opening to allow a filler nozzle to go far enough down to push open the flap. Even if there was no flap the nozzle would not be in far enough to avoid constant spillage while filling. See my website tonight for details Now with SL No
Myles
Actually, I'm running a unique prototype... ...Newton sent me a modified outer ring with the top segment enlarged for precisely this reason - but it didn't solve the problem - hence the need to hack the flap. I do have to be careful how I place the nozzle in the neck - it is very easy to get a massive splash-back.It's a case of dribbling a bit in, checking visually if it's foaming up the pipe and then easing in a stronger flow. I can certainly fill the car much quicker than with the Rover cap/flap though. ...I've still got the original outer-ring - I should have sent it back, but I'd had enough faffing.
