Smegnoguk
I have a 5 year-old 1600 VX Classic. To cut a long story short, following overheating problems I fitted a new ali radiator. Since then, the temperature rarely goes above 60 degrees C which seems quite low. Last week Caterham Cars fitted a new temperature sender. In traffic yesterday, it went up to 80 degrees C but the fan did not come on as I would have expected. At home, I ran it on the drive to see if the fan was working and noticed it coming on at 90 degrees C. This seems quite hot to me. Any thoughts? MikeW
The ali rad will make it run cooler ( unless you have a thermostat fitted)Would expect the fan to kick in at 80. Sound like a faulty sender to me. MikeW 1600 VX Black/Ali Race No
Sheds Moderator
I think a fan that comes on at 90 is OK bearing in mind some stats are 88°C, so that's a normal temerature. You still have 10 dgrees before you start getting concerned and 20 before you turn off, so with a nice big ally rad I'd leave it be. If you normally run at 60C then this means you don't have a thermostat. I think 60 is too cool.
Mark w
Standard fan switch for a current K is about 90 on 84 off ,I say about because they are not very accurate and suceptable to failure.Running at 60 seems wrong. Is the temperature sensor for the guage working properly ? MikeW
Stand corrected on the temp-although all the cars I know including mine have the fan coming on at 80. Without a thermostat I wouldn't expect temp to get above 60 with an ali rad. It will soon go up a bit out on track. 😬 MikeW 1600 VX Black/Ali Race No
Smegnoguk
Many thanks to all. I also spoke to George at Caterham Cars (very helpful) and he more or less confirmed the lack of thermostat (which was news to me) and fan switch set at 88 degrees C. He also thought 60 degrees a bit low but I am happy that this is down to the ali rad. I just hope everything works properly (oil in particular) at such a low temp. Otherwise I am fairly happy that all is OK. Member No. 10421
