Wrightpayne
Kev, my mechanic friend was able to shift most things with an air powered impact wrench. If you don't have a compressor you could always take the engine somewhere that has (now its out!).  good luck  Ian

Alex Wong1697456877
My engine Guru friend used a flywheel lock to lock the crankshaft and a socket and breaker bar with a 3 foot long piece of piping over it to get enough leveridge.
Sheds Moderator
You can lock the ring gear with a fabricated engine lock which attaches to one of the bellhousing attachment points. Traditionally you weld one up from angle iron in the scrap box. Then as Alex says you get a big bar on the bolt and heave. The assistance of bulky friends helps, as does swearing. michaelw
I am in no way recommending this but have seen it done. Remove the coil lead first and then simply put the socket on the pulley bolt and wedge the ratchet/breaker bar against the floor or preferably a solid part of the car and then flick the engine over on the starter for a very very short period of time. I have seen it done twice and it worked a treat with no problems. I suspect if it goes wrong all hell breaks loose and you ruin the engine chassis and anything that gets in the way of the flying bits. Michael. P.S. Please don't try it!!!!!!!! Edited by - michaelw on 21 Jan 2004 11:54:41 Edited by - michaelw on 21 Jan 2004 11:55:
16vastra
yeah, seen the starter 'flick' the bolt free when the engine has been in the car before now also if you cut the head off the thread is finger tight (apparently lol)
k.russell
Put a hardened dowel through clutch-flywheel bolt hole (6mm), got very *mad* and it moved 😬 😬,fitted new uprated oil rotor. fitting dry sump
