Taff Posted November 30, 2003 Posted November 30, 2003 Mr brother has kindly bought me some Kent fast road cams for my 1.6K Roadsport. The only modification on the car to date is a Powerspeed 4-2-1 exhaust. Can the existing engine management system cope with the new cams or will I have to add an Emerald or equivalent? Thoughts appreciated?
mahatma Posted November 30, 2003 Posted November 30, 2003 Guess it really depends on the spec of the cams and the timing. What duration and lift do the cams have ? Andy
oilyhands Posted November 30, 2003 Posted November 30, 2003 It's probable that the management will cope provided the cams are timed correctly. The thing which gives the ECU the greatest difficulty is not the extra fuelling requirement but the disruption to the manifold vacuum signal that the ECU needs. If the cams are not properly timed then it's likely that the idle will be very poor/non-existant and the engine will stall frequently. Make sure you fit verniers and time the cams according to the recommended lift at TDC settings. Oily
Taff Posted December 1, 2003 Author Posted December 1, 2003 Thanks for the feedback. The current plan is for my brother to carry out the basic installation and then get the engine properly set up (Recommendations appreciated?). I am keen not to compromise on the upgrade potential, so would you suugest retaining the existing ECU, or cutting my losses and upgrading this as well. I am really looking for maximum power and useability per pound spent!
