anon7 Posted November 29, 2003 Posted November 29, 2003 I have noticed a certain amount of what appears to be transmission oil coming from the bottom o my seven (ok so it wouldn`t be the top ❗). It is an antique type 4 speed crossflow jobbie and it appears to have recently started. Is this likely to be the rear oil box seal, and if so do I need to worry about it 🤔. I`ve heard it`s perectly normal for 6 speed boxes to leak on occasion and know some people do no more remedial work than put down a drip tray ❗ ❗. If I do need to replace the seal I`m assuming it`s an engine out job, but how awkward/dificult is it to do the seal afterwards 🤔 🤔. Do I just pretend not to have seen it, top up the gearbox now and then, and Enjoy as before.......... Any help appreciated ta.
Slipper man Posted November 29, 2003 Posted November 29, 2003 If you are going to thrash the car around a circuit then you will need to get it fixed. If most of your use is on the road, then just buy a drip tray and see how it progresses.
anon7 Posted November 29, 2003 Author Posted November 29, 2003 Thanks Keith It`s surprising what confience you get from someone else`s opinion... Hopefully doing the Le man trip so wasn`t too sure if I`d need to do owt before then.. I suppose being realistic I`ll have plenty of time to see how it`s going before then. Thanks again All the best
Graham Sewell Posted December 1, 2003 Posted December 1, 2003 It is amazing how far a small quantity of Hypoid oil goes when you don't wnat it (eg through carpets). I have had a slow leak from what I assume to be gearbox for the last x years and yet it seldom needs topping up during servicing. So I guess my advice would be to check the level occasionally and relax - unless you start doing track days, in which case check before and after. Low tech luddite - xflow and proud!
ECR Posted December 2, 2003 Posted December 2, 2003 Not too sure how the 4 speed box breathes, but the 5 speed breathes through a hole in the centre of the gearbox lid. Oil from the breather hole coagulates on the lid and usualy eventualy makes its way down the outside of the box and onto the floor. As has been said earlier a little goes a long way. I welded a boss over the breather on my lid and took a pipe to the engine catch tank. It was amazing how much cleaner the underside of the car stayed. It might be that simple
Jay Glass Posted December 2, 2003 Posted December 2, 2003 After 7 years, about 30,000mi and two 4 spds, both leaked a drop or two a night and even replacing rear seal did no good. Fix was a drip pan
